Given assertions of the theoretical, empirical, and practical importance of self-control, this meta-analytic study sought to review evidence concerning the relationship between dispositional self-control and behavior. The authors provide a brief overview over prominent theories of self-control, identifying implicit assumptions surrounding the effects of self-control that warrant empirical testing. They report the results of a meta-analysis of 102 studies (total N = 32,648) investigating the behavioral effects of self-control using the Self-Control Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and the Low Self-Control Scale. A small to medium positive effect of self-control on behavior was found for the three scales. Only the Self-Control Scale allowed for a fine-grained analysis of conceptual moderators of the self-control behavior relation. Specifically, self-control (measured by the Self-Control Scale) related similarly to the performance of desired behaviors and the inhibition of undesired behaviors, but its effects varied dramatically across life domains (e.g., achievement, adjustment). In addition, the associations between self-control and behavior were significantly stronger for automatic (as compared to controlled) behavior and for imagined (as compared to actual) behavior.

The Intergenerational Transmission of Violence: A Gender-Based Analysis of Social Learning Theory

Sexual assaults are underreported to the police, even though this crime affects one in four college women. Using a vignette design, this study fills a gap in the literature by examining the influence of prior police perceptions, procedurally unjust treatment, and the sex of the responding officer on college women's likelihood to report sexual assault. Results indicate positive prior police perceptions significantly increase students’ perceived likelihood to report sexual victimization. Even when controlling for prior perceptions, procedurally unfair treatment significantly decreases the likelihood of future victimization reporting. Responding officer sex does not affect students’ decision to report.

Some researchers argue singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s lyrics focus on alcohol, promiscuous  sex, and drugs, while others say Buffett’s music has changed since he sold out to corporate  sponsorship. Results from a systematic coding of all 386 of his songs released since 1969  indicate Buffett’s music is more about escape and irony than deviant behaviours. Furthermore,  lyric themes remain largely unaltered even through an increase in his popularity and corporate  sponsorship.

Over the past decade, the annual number of new HIV infections and HIV-related deaths has been declining steadily in most regions of the world, primarily due to significant scale-up in prevention and treatment. Approximately 2.5 million people became newly infected in 2011—a 20% reduction from 2001 (1). Even in sub-Saharan Africa, the number of newly infected people has decreased in 23 of the 49 countries in the region (1). Despite this progress, sub-Saharan Africa still accounted for 71% of newly infected adults and children and 69% of people living with HIV in the world in 2011 (1). While there has also been decreasing incidence of HIV infection in adolescents in many countries—linked to clear trends toward safer behaviours and practices, including increased condom use and reduction in the number of sexual partners—adolescents remain particularly vulnerable to the infection, and HIV continues to be a prominent cause of death in this segment of the population (1). In many countries, incidence rates of HIV in adolescents and young people (15–24) remain unacceptably high, and adolescents still account disproportionately for over 41% of new HIV infection in the 15–49 age group (2).
