Identity and language learning : gender, ethnicity and educational change

▪ Abstract This paper provides a survey of critical discourse analysis (CDA), a recent school of discourse analysis that concerns itself with relations of power and inequality in language. CDA explicitly intends to incorporate social-theoretical insights into discourse analysis and advocates social commitment and interventionism in research. The main programmatic features and domains of enquiry of CDA are discussed, with emphasis on attempts toward theory formation by one of CDA's most prominent scholars, Norman Fairclough. Another section reviews the genesis and disciplinary growth of CDA, mentions some of the recent critical reactions to it, and situates it within the wider picture of a new critical paradigm developing in a number of language-oriented (sub) disciplines. In this critical paradigm, topics such as ideology, inequality, and power figure prominently, and many scholars productively attempt to incorporate social-theoretical insights into the study of language.

Critical discourse analysis

How have changes in media affected our everyday experience, behavior, and sense of identity? Such questions have generated endless arguments and speculations, but no thinker has addressed the issue with such force and originality as Joshua Meyrowitz in No Sense of Place. Advancing a daring and sophisticated theory, Meyrowitz shows how television and other electronic media have created new social situations that are no longer shaped by where we are or who is "with" us. While other media experts have limited the debate to message content, Meyrowitz focuses on the ways in which changes in media rearrange "who knows what about whom" and "who knows what compared to whom," making it impossible for us to behave with each other in traditional ways. No Sense of Place explains how the electronic landscape has encouraged the development of: -More adultlike children and more childlike adults; -More career-oriented women and more family-oriented men; and -Leaders who try to act more like the "person next door" and real neighbors who want to have a greater say in local, national, and international affairs. The dramatic changes fostered by electronic media, notes Meyrowitz, are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. In some ways, we are returning to older, pre-literate forms of social behavior, becoming "hunters and gatherers of an information age." In other ways, we are rushing forward into a new social world. New media have helped to liberate many people from restrictive, place-defined roles, but the resulting heightened expectations have also led to new social tensions and frustrations. Once taken-for-granted behaviors are now subject to constant debate and negotiation. The book richly explicates the quadruple pun in its title: Changes in media transform how we sense information and how we make sense of our physical and social places in the world.

From his opening mockery of the literary establishment’s tendency to theorize the world in terms of desire or gender to his disapproval of those who venerate art while denying its validity in the same breath, Jonathan Dollimore has created an easily understood, albeit at times too theoretical, synthesis of the literary and the experiential in Sex, Literature and Censorship. His arguments on critical theory do not necessarily reject the concept of theory; rather, he argues that critical theorists should strive to understand the contradictions within our lives and our literature and explore the daemonic power of the subjects that offend our sense of tradition.

Researching Language: Issues of Power and Method

Research in social science frequently rests on unequal power relationships. This book discusses the possibilities of developing the research process so that it benefits the subjects as well as the researcher. The authors distinguish between "ethical", "advocate" and "empowering" approaches to the relationship between researcher and researched, linking these to different ideas about the nature of knowledge, action, language, and social relations. They then use a series of empirical case studies to explore the possibilities for "empowering research". All qualitative social research depends to some degree on researching language. The book is the product of dialogue between researchers from a range of disciplines - anthropology, cultural studies, sociology and linguistics. It can be read by researchers, teachers and students across the social sciences, and, through its combination of philosophical discussion, methodological recommendation and case-study illustration, it provides guidance that is practical without being simplistic. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in linguistics, sociology, social anthropology and communication studies.

Television Dramatic Dialogue: A Sociolinguistic Study

Consumer/citizens of the late 20th and early 21st century have been invited to apprehend life as a hazardous enterprise and to pay attention to news and information about public health issues so as to make lifestyle choices from an informed position. Although not available to everyone, amongst the possible sources of news and information we must now include the world of electronic on-line communication. This paper focuses upon one particular domain of such communication: asynchronous newsgroups, examining the ways that participants show their concern for the trustworthiness of their own and others' contributions to debate.
