Host perceptions of sociocultural impacts

Feminist theories of technology have come a long way over the last quarter of a century. The expanding engagement at the intersection of feminist scholarship and science and technology studies (STS) has enriched both fields immeasurably, and I will largely focus my reflections on the literature associated with these sites. I begin by highlighting the continuities as well as the differences between contemporary and earlier feminist debates on technology. Current approaches focus on the mutual shaping of gender and technology, in which technology is conceptualised as both a source and consequence of gender relations. In avoiding both technological determinism and gender essentialism, such theories emphasise that the gender-technology relationship is fluid and situated. These deliberations highlight how processes of technical change can influence gender power relations. A feminist politics of technology is thus key to achieving gender equality.

Residents’ support for tourism: An Identity Perspective

Structural modeling of resident perceptions of tourism and associated development on the Sunshine Coast, Australia

There is evidence that policy-makers in most Western welfare states are moving towards a new set of assumptions about the contributions that men and women make to families, based on an adult worker model. This paper first examines this shift in policy assumptions at the EU level and goes on to argue that there are real limits to the pursuit of a full adult worker model based on the commodification of care. In respect of gender equality, this in turn raises the issue of the terms and conditions on which such a shift in policy assumptions are made, particularly about the valuing and sharing of the unpaid work of care. The final part of the paper examines the possibilities offered by the capabilities approach of addressing these issues.

The adult worker model family, gender equality and care: the search for new policy principles and the possibilities and problems of a capabilities approach

This is an exploration of the changing structure of women's paid work in Britain since World War II. Four case-studies, drawing upon original research material, give accounts of developments across the whole range of women's employment; form the"post-feminist" finance profesional to unskilled workers. This work is set within a context of current theoreticl debates concerning gender, occupationalsegretagion, and class and stratification, and is complemented by a review of the structure of women's employment in other Western countries. The book also provides a summary and crtiques of current developments within a series of sociological debates.
