Journal ArticleDOI

Hypoxia-Induced Inhibition of Adenosine Kinase Potentiates Cardiac Adenosine Release

TL;DR: Because of the normal high turnover of the AMP-adenosine metabolic cycle, hypoxia-induced inhibition of adenosine kinase causes the amplification of small changes in free AMP into a major rise inAdenosine, which plays an important role in the high sensitivity of the cardiac adenoine system to impaired oxygenation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Transendothelial transport and metabolism of adenosine and inosine in the intact rat aorta.

TL;DR: It is suggested that macrovascular endothelium of the aorta constitutes a highly effective metabolic barrier for circulating adenosine and inosine, and transfer of labeled adenine nucleotides from endothelia to underlying smooth muscle is rather small and most likely proceeds via dephospborylated purine compounds.
