Radio and audio in 2020

Narratives are central to the organization and transformation of society due to their ability to maintain stability and promote change. This dual ability is realized by metanarratives as they articulate and reiterate the organizing principles that underpin social arrangements and shape the development of related storylines. Narratives can also be mobilized to justify and legitimize change processes through sensemaking that articulates alternative perspectives and verbalizes new realities into existence. However, previous research has not explicitly examined the reciprocal interdependence of these processes, and a nuanced understanding of how new narratives are constructed by and among organizations is still missing. Responding to this gap, this research empirically explores how small businesses draw on organizing principles for making sense of their attempt to transform industrialized production and consumption systems into more sustainable versions. The examined industry transformations in the brewing sector in Canada and Germany show how metanarratives shape these processes by making tacitly held understandings explicit in language, externalizing alternative organizing principles around ‘the art of making’ and ‘cooperation as a means to prosper.’ The case studies illustrate how studied small businesses creatively draw on these organizing principles to make sense of new action contexts in a way that challenges industrial and competitive industry arrangements; these alternative metanarratives support small businesses to create new meaning categories around ‘aesthetics’ and ‘affective work’ (i.e., creating and managing emotions), and establish a ‘collaborative ethos’ as well as ‘relational identities.’ This research demonstrates that the constructed narratives of change that guide industry transformations toward sustainability do not emerge in a vacuum and that both alternative organizing principles of metanarratives and the sensemaking of actors are mutually dependent.

Small Holds Sway: How Small Businesses Mobilize Knowledge to Support Action in Learning Processes for Sustainability Transformations

Although podcasts have become a popular medium since the early 2000s, geographers' use of the format as a research and dissemination method is underdeveloped. This paper examines how audio podcasts can be deployed as geographical processes to explore place and convey spatial themes in an impactful and innovative inclusive manner. Using the case study of a short series produced to consider the role of a river in the life of a region, I show how field recordings, interviews, and historical sources can be woven together to examine a place in an evocative and accessible manner. Podcasting is a research and communication tool, which can dovetail with existing approaches, with the potential to understand different environments in new ways, let community voices speak for themselves, and reach broader audiences. The paper argues that podcasts present new opportunities to consider how we appreciate and use sound to tell the story of places in participative and evocative ways. 

Making a podcast: Reflecting on creating a place‐based podcast

In this article I will explore and share my pedagogical practices and ex-periences as a feminist scholar of religion, within the context of a voluntary postgraduate reading group, during the first nine months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The article is structured in two parts. The first part offers a reflection of the teaching approaches that inspired and enabled the production of a podcast about the study of religion from the perspective of black African students and scholars of religion. The second part conceptualizes the pro-duction of a podcast as a feminist pedagogical experiment and reflects on this process alongside feminist pedagogical principles. While the orientation of this article is tentative and reflexive, it advances the argument that because of the commitment to social justice that is inherent to feminist approaches to scholarship and pedagogy, feminist scholars are generally poised to work within the contexts of crisis. Therefore, within the context of the pandemic, feminist approaches to teaching and learning in the study of religion may yield insights that can contribute to the continued development of sustainable pedagogies that honor the fraught nature of these times for both scholars and students.

Feminist Pandemic Pedagogies: Podcasting and the Study of Religion

This paper systematically reviews the use of podcasts in planning education. Podcasting is part of a broader expansion and diversification of digital technology in education, responding to its use in teaching approaches and research dissemination. The ability to gather and share information across time and space, alongside emphases on dialogue, participation, and voice, also means that podcasts may hold emancipatory potential. This systematic review highlights how podcasts may support active learning among students and create dialogues between students and communities under-represented in mainstream debate, and the extent to which they may enhance strategies of blended and active learning in planning curricula.

Abstract In this introduction to the interventions section titled Relationality and Anti-Oppressive Geographic Praxis, I examine how feminist geography has contributed to a concept of relationality within geography and how a deeper engagement with the concept may advance anti-oppressive praxis in the discipline. I introduce four intervention pieces included in this section that explore relational approaches to geographic research, teaching, and institutional practices.
