Allelopathy has been considered not only as an environmentally friendly approach for weed control but also a potential reason causing autotoxicity in crop production. In this study, the responses of seeds of lettuce, wheat, rice, clover broomrape (CB), and sunflower broomrape (SB) to the root exudates of rice cultivars were studied. Lettuce germination was promoted by root exudates of Yliangyou 3218 and I-Kung-Pao. Wheat seedling growth was inhibited by all nine rice species. I-Kung-Pao and Ganxin 203 exerted greater autotoxicity than other cultivars. Yongyou 15 and I-Kung-Pao induced the highest germination rate of CB, while Yongyou 13, Zhongzao 22, and I-Kung-Pao induced the highest germination rate of SB. A significantly correlation was noted between germination-inducing ability on broomrape seeds and allelopathic effects on target plants. It is suggested that using broomrape seeds germination is a better receptor for the identification of rice allelopathic potential.

In this study, the allelopathic potential of dehulled rice, rice, and hulls of rice on germination of weeds was evaluated in laboratory. Phenolic acids in growth media of these plants were also identified and quantified using HPLC. Identified allelochemicals were reversely tested for phytotoxic effects on germination and seedling growth of barnyardgrass, lettuce, radish and rice. The results showed that the inhibitory effects of dehulled rice were stronger than those of hulls and rice. Dehulled rice caused 66.7% and 50.6% reduction in radish root length and lettuce shoot height, respectively. Dehulled rice showed strong inhibitory effects on root length of lettuce and shoot height of radish while hulls and rice exhibited stimulation. Regarding phenolic identification, vanillin and vanillic acid were detected as allelochemicals in root exudates of rice and tested plants. The results revealed that most of the vanillin and vanillic acid treatments showed high inhibitory effects on germination rates and seedling growth of lettuce and radish, high stimulatory activity on root elongation of rice. Vanillic acid (100 ppm and 200 ppm), vanillin (100 ppm) and their mixture (200 ppm) completely inhibited survival of lettuce. The findings indicate the allelopathic potential of dehulled rice which can be used for identification of more phytotoxins to produce bioherbicides in agricultural practices.

Allelopathic activity of dehulled rice and its allelochemicals on weed germination

The inhibitory effect (allelopathic potential) of shoot, seed and root extracts of 8 white, 5 red and 5 black rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars was determined against the seedling growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.). All extracts inhibited hypocotyl and root growth of lettuce and white clover seedlings, and those inhibitory activities ranged from –1% – 96%. The average inhibitory activity of the extracts on the hypocotyl and root growth of lettuce and white clover was 42 – 88%. No apparent difference in the inhibitory activity was found either among the extracts of white, red and black rice, or among the extracts of shoots, seeds and roots. However, the red rice cultivar Tsushima-akamai marked the greatest inhibitory activity with an average of 88% growth inhibition on hypocotyls and roots of lettuce and white clover, followed by Souja-akamai and Koshihikari.
