A method of classifying cells based upon their morphology includes a method of classifying objects in a cytological specimen, including the steps of obtaining a first image of at least part of a cytological specimen, classifying objects in the first image on the basis of a predetermined criteria, obtaining a second image of at least one of the objects most likely to have a predetermined criteria, and displaying at least part of the second image to produce a visual display of at least one of the objects most likely to have a predetermined criteria. The method of classifying objects in a specimen includes the steps of obtaining a first digital representation of at least part of the cytological specimen, storing the first digital representation, performing a first filtering operation to filter out images in the first representation that are the approximate size of a malignant or premalignant cell or smaller to produce a second digital representation, removing the images in the second representation from the images in the first representation to produce a third representation, performing a second filtering operation to filter out images in the first representation that are the approximate size of premalignant or malignant cell or larger than the approximate size of a premalignant or malignant cell to produce a fourth representation, and eliminating the images in the fourth representation from the images in the third representation to produce a representation having substantially only images the approximate size of a premalignant or malignant cell.

Morphological classification system and method

An encoder and decoder for generating and decoding convolutional codes of enhanced orthogonality. In an exemplary embodiment the encoder includes a K bit length shift register for receiving an input serial stream of information bits and providing for each input bit a K bit parallel output to an orthogonal code sequence generator where one of 2 K-1 symbol sequences is generated with each symbol sequence of a K-2 symbol length. The encoded symbol stream is decoded using an orthogonal function generator driven by a K-2 binary counter to generate all possible symbol sequences for comparison with each received symbol sequence. The output of the comparison is Viterbi decoded to provide the original stream of information bits. Corresponding methods of encoding the information bits and decoding of the symbol sequences are included.

Method and apparatus for generating super-orthogonal convolutional codes and the decoding thereof

An error correcting system and method for use with a continuous serialized stream of digital information, such as present with digitized stereo audio signals, in which data is formatted (16) in frames containing a preselected number of data words, parity words which in combination with data words of other frames enable correction of data in yet other, spatially remote frames, error check words from which errors in any frame may be detected, and frame sync words, and wherein the parity words are encoded (14) from three orthogonal data sets having in common a single data word so that that word can be reconstructed by operating on any of the three sets, thus enabling correction of that word even if one or two of the three sets also contains an error.

Single track orthogonal error correction system

An MSK or OK-QPSK data signal demodulator includes a filter and limiter for filtering and amplitude limiting the data signal, a timer for generating a timing signal indicating elapsed time and a microcomputer coupled to the limited data signal from the limiter and the timing signal from the timer. The microcomputer is interrupted by each transition of the limited data signal and stores the timing signal from the timer. An interrupt routine of the microcomputer extracts the clock offset, which is an estimate of the relative location of the bit boundaries, and the phase intercept, which is an estimate of the phase of the data signal at the bit boundaries, from the timing signals.

MSK and OK-QPSK signal demodulator

An error correcting system for DPSK is comprised of an encoder unit, a decoder unit and a transmission medium disposed between the encoder and decoder units. The encoder includes a differential encoder for differentially encoding an input data sequence, an error correcting encoder for adding a check digit sequence to the differentially encoded data sequence, and a differential decoder for differentially decoding the data sequence added with the check digit sequence. The decoder unit includes a differential encoder for differentially encoding a received data sequences, an error correcting decoder for correcting error digits contained in the differentially encoded received data sequence, and a differential decoder for differentially decoding the output data sequence from the error correcting decoder. The transmission medium typically includes a differentially encoded phase-shifting-keying modulator unit and a differentially encoded phase-shift-keying demodulator unit.

Error correction system for differential phase-shift-keying

The differential detection system comprises a demodulator for a modulated carrier transmission system for binary signals, in which a symbol detected from the phase difference between the received signal delayed by one signaling interval and the signal received in the present signaling interval is converted into data and a symbol detected from the phase difference between the received signal delayed by two signaling intervals and a signal received in the present signaling interval is converted into parity. The data and the parity are applied to a decoder for a rate 1/2 single error correcting self-orthogonal convolutional code effecting demodulation with non-redundant error correction. The correction system is also applicable to demodulate a carrier wave modulated by m (an integer) level digital data.
