The phrase “attachment to the ordinary landscape” seems simple and straightforward, if vague and inclusive. Nevertheless, each of the three critical terms deserves attention. Attachment I define as an affective relationship between people and the landscape that goes beyond cognition, preference, or judgment. Ordinary means routine, experienced in everyday life. This excludes “special” landscapes, those that contrast with routine experience, landscapes such as shrines and wilderness. Landscape I use in a broad, naive sense, as a setting for human experience and activity. In scale, it might be described as “larger than a household but smaller than one of earth’s biogeograph-ical regions.” It includes some of the spatial topics of other chapters in this book, such as possessions, childhood places, community, home, and home gardens.

nand urbanization: the dirt, dilapidation, overcrowding, and unsanitary conditions of industrial cities. It is our view that the uncritical continuation and extension of these policies as priorities for twentieth century problems is inappropriate be­ cause these policies do not take into account new information. First, sani­ tary programs in the nineteenth century were primarily directed toward, and had a major impact on, the infectious diseases that decimated popula­ tions at that time. These diseases are no longer the main causes of morbidity and mortality in industrialized nations of the world. The main causes of disease today include conditions not related directly to sanitation, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, mental illness, accidents, and sui­ cide. Second, the development of modern industrialized communities has generated a range of new disease-producin g agents also not related directly to sanitation, such as toxic chemicals and waste, increased levels of ionizing radiation, vehicle exhaust and other new synthetic products that pollute air, water and food. Third, as will be seen, new evidence indicates that disease occurs more frequently (a) among those with fewer meaningful social rela­ tionships, (b) among those in lower hierarchical positions, and (c) among those disconnected from their biological and cultural heritage.

While it is well known that the built environment influences our emotional state, it is often difficult to attribute these experiences to particular properties. In fact, a systematic investigation of the relation between physical structure and emotional experience of architecture has not yet been done. Now virtual reality simulations facilitate a completely controlled variation of spatial properties and thus allow to empirically evaluate architectural hypothesises. The aim of the presented study was to investigate which factors from a component-based description of rooms significantly correlate with cardinal dimensions of experience. In a perceptual experiment experiental qualities of 16 virtual vacant rectangular interiors were rated in eight principal categories by 16 participants using the semantic differential scaling technique. The scenes were generated by a custom made graphics tool that also automatically generated the component-based scene descriptions. The data analysis revealed several interesting correlations between scene features and rated experience: For example, a preference for ratios near to the golden section could be observed for spatial proportions, which are not directly perceivable. Altogether, a set of five independent factors (openness, two room proportions, room area and balustrade height) appeared to be effective for widely describing the observed variance of the averaged attributed experiental qualities. Our combination of realistic virtual reality simulations and psychophysical data raising methods proved to be effective for basic architectural research. It allowed us to demonstrate quantitative relations between physical properties from a component-based description of architectural space and its emotional experience.

The purpose of ornament-to articulate a realm of the imagination-is as important as it is misunderstood. Kent Bloomer, an outstanding sculptor and ornamenter whose work adorns the Harold Washington Library, Chicago, Reagan National Airport, Washington, DC, and other buildings, maintains that ornament is neither pure "art" in the contemporary sense of the word nor mere decoration, but rather a category unto itself, with its own unique language. He describes the key elements of ornament, rhythm and metamorphosis, and shows their application in such figures as the foliated scroll. Illustrated with the author's evocative line drawings and photographs of ornament from ancient Greece to the modern cityscape, the book is a hymn to the riches of architectural ornament.
