The method involves contacting at least a portion of a hydrophobic substrate with a composition that comprises a polysaccharide, a modified polysaccharide, a derivative of a polysaccharide, or a derivative of a modified polysaccharide; and then printing a pattern or other indicia on at least a portion of the portion of the hydrophobic substrate that was contacted with a polysaccharide, a modified polysaccharide, a derivative of a polysaccharide, or a derivative of a modified polysaccharide using an ink composition.

The invention relates to a process for the printing of fabrics composed of natural fibres or of fabrics having a substantial natural fibre content of cotton, wool, silk or linen, by means of a transfer printing process, the fabrics being materials whose surfaces from the start have no adequate affinity for the dyes to be transferred from the transfer paper to the substrate, the fabric surface to be printed first being finished or pretreated by applying transparent lacquer to this surface, the lacquer being one which is at least free of natural resins, which, after drying thereof, can absorb and fix the sublimable dye(s) of the transfer paper during the subsequent transfer printing process. The resin-free lacquer is an ormocer lacquer.
