Patterns of depletion in a Kenya rhino population and the conservation implications.

The rapid increase in the number of national parks in Africa south of the Sahara from 44 in 1960 to 138 in 1980 has been seen as a major success story. However, the thesis that national parks would not only be self-supporting but also contribute to national economic development seems to be ill-founded. The finance necessary for the management and development of their national parks has not been provided by most countries. As a result benign neglect has begun to operate and the integrity of an increasing number of parks is threatened by actual or potential exploitation of natural resources, the development of communications, and by farm and pastoral encroachment. It is concluded that international aid, given on the basis of both an international and national geographical appraisal of the importance of each park, is needed if national parks are to be preserved for posterity.
