This paper presents control and coordination algorithms for groups of vehicles. The focus is on autonomous vehicle networks performing distributed sensing tasks where each vehicle plays the role of a mobile tunable sensor. The paper proposes gradient descent algorithms for a class of utility functions which encode optimal coverage and sensing policies. The resulting closed-loop behavior is adaptive, distributed, asynchronous, and verifiably correct.

Recent progress in flapping wing aerodynamics and aeroelasticity

Biomimetics, a name coined by Otto Schmitt in the 1950s for the transfer of ideas and analogues from biology to technology, has produced some significant and successful devices and concepts in the past 50 years, but is still empirical. We show that TRIZ, the Russian system of problem solving, can be adapted to illuminate and manipulate this process of transfer. Analysis using TRIZ shows that there is only 12% similarity between biology and technology in the principles which solutions to problems illustrate, and while technology solves problems largely by manipulating usage of energy, biology uses information and structure, two factors largely ignored by technology.

Classifications, applications, and design challenges of drones: A review

It is the objective of this paper to review recent developments in the understanding and prediction of flapping-wing aerodynamics. To this end, several flapping-wing configurations are considered. First, the problem of single flapping wings is treated with special emphasis on the dependence of thrust, lift, and propulsive efficiency on flapping mode, amplitude, frequency, and wing shape. Second, the problem of hovering flight is studied for single flapping wings. Third, the aerodynamic phenomena and benefits produced by the flapping-wing interactions on tandem wings or biplane configurations are discussed. Such interactions occur on dragonflies or on a recently developed micro air vehicle. The currently available two- and three-dimensional inviscid and viscous flapping-wing flow solutions are presented. It is shown that the results are strongly dependent on flapping frequency, amplitude, and Reynolds number. These findings are substantiated by comparison with the available experimental data.

The ability of a sinusoidally plunging airfoil to produce thrust, known as the Knoller-Betz or Katzmayr effect, is investigated experimentally and numerically. Water-tunnel experiments are performed providing flow visualization and laser Doppler velocimetry data of the unsteady wakes formed by the plunging foils. Vortical structures and time-averaged velocity profiles in the wake are compared with numerical computations from a previously developed inviscid, unsteady panel code that utilizes a nonlinear wake model

Numerical computation of flapping-wing propulsion and power extraction

This paper addresses the development of a vision-based target tracking system for a small unmanned air vehicle. The algorithm performs autonomous tracking of a moving target, while simultaneously estimating GPS coordinates of the target. A low cost off the shelf system is utilized, with a modified radio controlled aircraft airframe, gas engine and servos. Tracking is enabled using a low-cost, miniature pan-tilt gimbal. The control algorithm provides rapid and sustained target acquisition and tracking capability. A target position estimator was designed and shown to provide reasonable targeting accuracy. The impact of target loss events on the control and estimation algorithms is analyzed in detail.

Vision-based tracking and motion estimation for moving targets using small UAVs

An attempt is made to generate waverider flows from given shock wave geometries using two approaches. In the first approach, axisymmetric flows are used to construct more general flows based on the concept of osculating cones. Conical waverider design can thus be extended to yield results also for shocks forming a slope surface. The second approach involves solving the ill-posed problem of prescribing a shock wave and finding the flow field behind it. A new numerical marching technique with some features of characteristic cross marching is used to solve the Euler equation. The code selection and some test cases are discussed.
