A feedthrough filter capacitor assembly includes a conductive terminal pin which extends through a first passageway of a capacitor in conductive relation with a first set of electrode plates, and through a conductive ferrule and an insulator in non-conductive relation. The insulator includes ground plates conductively coupled to the ferrule. A second set of electrode plates of the capacitor are conductively coupled to the insulator ground plates, such as by a ground pin extending through the capacitor in relation with the second set of electrode plates, and at least partially extending through a second passageway of the insulator in conductive relation with the ground plates. In this manner, the exterior electrical/mechanical connection between the capacitor and ferrule or other ground member is eliminated.

Feedthrough filter capacitor assembly with internally grounded hermetic insulator

A feedthrough array for use in an implantable medical device is provided including an insulator, a plurality of conductive feedthrough pins extending through the insulator, and a ferrule including a flange extending inwardly from a ferrule sidewall along at least a majority of a length of a first ferrule side. A capacitor is disposed over the insulator and conductively coupled to the ferrule flange.

Feedthrough array for use in implantable medical devices

Methods and apparatuses are provided for an electrical device that employs a feedthrough including a hermetic seal that seals an interior region of the electrical device. The electrical device includes an electrical contact disposed within the interior region of the electrical device, and a wire terminal that includes an encircled portion that is encircled by the feedthrough, and a first end that electrically connects with said electrical contact. When the electrical device is constructed, the first end of the wire terminal is coated with a conductive metal that is more resistant to oxidation than the wire terminal. The first end of the wire terminal is secured to the electrical contact using a mechanical device such as a crimping connector or a spring connector.

Feedthrough apparatus with noble metal-coated leads

A feedthrough device includes a conductive ferrule having an outer peripheral surface defining the outermost boundary of the feedthrough device, an insulator, a lead wire electrically isolated from the ferrule extending through the insulator, a filter capacitor adjacent the insulator through which the lead wire extends in conductive relation therewith, and a ground wire coupled to the ferrule and to the insulator within the outermost boundary of the feedthrough device. The ferrule has an inner peripheral surface defining an opening therethrough and each of the insulator and the filter capacitor has an outer peripheral surface proximate the inner peripheral surface, a counterbore in the outer peripheral surface of each of the insulator and filter capacitor, an end of the ground wire being received in the counterbore and brazed to the ferrule and insulator. Alternatively, an end of the ground wire is welded to the inner peripheral surface of the ferrule.

Internally grounded filtering feedthrough

Terminal pins comprising an outer coating of palladium coating a core material other than of palladium for incorporated into feedthrough filter capacitor assemblies are described. The feedthrough filter capacitor assemblies are particularly useful for incorporation into implantable medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators, and the like, to decouple and shield internal electronic components of the medical device from undesirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) signals.

Feedthrough filter capacitor assemblies having low cost terminal pins

A feedthrough device and brazing process for joining the constituent parts of the feedthrough device, while allowing a lead to pass therethrough in a nonconductive manner. The feedthrough comprises at least one lead, a ferrule defining a capacitor recess and defining an insulator recess, an insulator disposed in the insulator recess of the ferrule, the insulator defining a passageway sized to allow the lead to pass therethrough. The feedthrough further comprises a capacitor disposed in the capacitor recess and defining a capacitor passageway sized to allow the lead to pass threrethrough, and the capacitor comprises first and second sets of plates, wherein the first set of plates is conductively coupled to the ferrule and the second set of plates is conductively coupled to the lead. Brazing is a two step process wherein the braze joints between the insulator and the lead and between the insulator and ferrule are formed first at a first temperature using an insulator braze material. The second step of brazing is performed at a lower temperature than the brazing in the first step, and utilizes capacitor braze materials that are different from the insulator braze materials in that they have lower melting temperatures than the insulator braze materials.

Installation of filter capacitors into feedthroughs for implantable medical devices

A filtered feedthrough including a ferrule surrounding an insulator supporting one or more lead wires and at least one ground pin is described. The insulator defines a channel cutout extending from a first insulator side to a channel cutout bottom part way through the thickness of the insulator and in communication with the ferrule. An attached filter capacitor shunts electromagnetic interference from the lead wire to the ground pin, and the ground pin is in electrical communication with the ferrule by way of a ferrule-ground pin braze joint formed in the channel cutout.
