Resource Description & Access (RDA) is intended to provide a flexible and extensible framework that can accommodate all types of content and media within rapidly evolving digital environments while also maintaining compatibility with the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2). The cataloging community is grappling with practical issues in navigating the transition from AACR2 to RDA; there is a definite need to evaluate major subject areas and broader themes in information organization under the new RDA paradigm. This article aims to accomplish this task through a thorough and critical review of the emerging RDA literature published from 2005 to 2011. The review mostly concerns key areas of difference between RDA and AACR2, the relationship of the new cataloging code to metadata standards, the impact on encoding standards such as Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC), end user considerations, and practitioners' views on RDA implementation and training. Future research will require more in-depth studies of RDA's expected benefits and the manner in which the new cataloging code will improve resource retrieval and bibliographic control for users and catalogers alike over AACR2. The question as to how the cataloging community can best move forward to the post-AACR2/MARC environment must be addressed carefully so as to chart the future of bibliographic control in the evolving environment of information production, management, and use.

RDA: Resource description & access—a survey of the current state of the art

Two Association of Research Libraries member libraries, the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC) and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), evaluated their monograph acquisition approval plan profiles to answer basic questions concerning use, cost effectiveness, and coverage. Data were collected in tandem from vendors and local online systems to track book receipt, item circulation, and overlap between plans. The study period was fiscal year 2005 (July 1, 2004–June 30, 2005) for the approval plan purchasing data, and circulation use data were collected from July 1, 2004, through March 31, 2007, for both UIUC and Penn State. Multiple data points were collected for each title, including author, title, ISBN, publisher, Library of Congress classification number, purchase price, and circulation data. Results of the study measured the cost-effectiveness of each plan by subject and publisher, analyzed similarities and differences in use, and examined the overlap between the two approval plans. The goals were to establish a benchmark for consistently evaluating approval plan profile effectiveness and to provide a reproducible method with baseline data that will allow other libraries to collect comparable data and conduct their own studies.

Transferring Cataloging Legacies into Descriptive Metadata Creation in Digital Projects: Catalogers’ Perspective

Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist at OCLC Research, discussed results of her research of library user information-seeking behavior and user attitudes toward the library. She discovered that while students and researchers are confident in their own ability to find and use information, information literacy has not kept pace with digital literacy and there is a need for education and support. In particular she discussed the modified model C, a conceptual model for separating the bibliographic world into monographic and ongoing entities (as opposed to the current separation into monographic and serial); and incorporating entry, a proposed method for handling title changes for electronic journals that impose the new title on all of the older issues.

The Latest on Latest (Entry) and Other Hot News on Seriality

Northwestern University Library has resurrected the practice of latest entry cataloging to avoid some of the difficulties encountered with split entries resulting from the use of successive entry cataloging in its online integrated system. As a result of applying latest entry to selected title changes while attempting to conform as much as possible to AACR2, Northwestern developed rules to be used as a supplement to AACR2 Chapters 12 and 21. The rules and accompanying examples represent recent developments in Northwestern's experiment with latest entry cataloging.
