Linkages between vulnerability, resilience, and adaptive capacity

This presentation is to give a brief introduction to sustainable development which is related to the quality of life in a society. In the first part, the economic, social and environmental aspects are discussed to define a sustainable society which provide a healthy, productive, meaningful life for generations, both present and future. The second part of the presentation would focus on presenting indicators of sustainability and their measures. Indicators generally simplify in order to make complex phenomena quantifiable so that information can be measured and communicated. Sustainability indicators reflect the reality that the three different segments, the economic, social and environmental, are very tightly interconnected. They like to be informed about the state of these segments and how and why they are changing. The target audiences of this presentation is people who involve in environmental, clean energy activitities or in sustainable development in general. It is expected to be helpful for the audiences in developing indicators for their actual works.

Dynamic evaluation of the green development level of China's coal-resource-based cities using the TOPSIS method

The Amazon Delta and Estuary (ADE) is a region of continental and global ecological importance. Controversy, many of the basic infrastructure and services essential for quality of life and sustainable development of this delta are absent. Using a conceptual model to define socio-economic vulnerability in the urban ADE, a thorough assessment of indicators including sanitation services, housing conditions, household income, population, flood risk and unplanned settlements was conducted in 41 cities at the census sector scale (n = 2938). A multi criterion index was applied to classify urban vulnerability from three dimensions: flood exposure, socio-economic sensitivity and infrastructure. This is the first study to examine urban vulnerability within and between urban areas of the ADE. Results indicated that most of the urban sectors of the ADE are exposed to potential risks due to a combination of flood hazards, poverty and basic structural deficiencies such as insufficient drinking water or inadequate waste water collection, with several sectors being afflicted by similar problems. The assessment of vulnerability indicates that 60–90 % of the urban population live in conditions of moderate to high degree of vulnerability. The ADE cities presented a pattern where vulnerability increases from city center to their newly developed urban areas. Inadequate planning coupled with rapid urbanization has contributed to the development of unplanned settlements in almost half of the urban sectors of the ADE. Combined, these factors contribute to widespread socio-economic vulnerability along the urban spaces of the ADE, increasing exposure to health risks and more frequent seasonal and stochastic events such as storm surges and high flooding levels.

Assessment of ecological vulnerability of resource-based cities based on entropy-set pair analysis

Mining cities in China are vital energy bases that contribute greatly to the country’s development. With the pressure of resources depletion and environmental destruction, the sustainable development of these cities is increasingly concerned by the government. This study chooses typical mining cities in Anhui Province of China as the case studies, then selects ten indicators from four dimensions of natural, economic, social, and environmental resources and improves the relative resources carrying capacity (RRCC) model. The dynamic changes of RRCC of these cities from 2007 to 2017 are analyzed. Then the predicted values in 2018-2023 were gotten based on GM (1, 1) model. The results indicate that: (1) Overall, the RRCC of these cities are overload and the overload population has slightly decreased. (2) The primary resources carrying the population are natural resources, but their carrying capacity shows a declining trend. The carrying capacities of economic, social, and environmental resources are much less than that of natural resources, although they have increased a lot in these years. (3) The RRCC and its variation tendency of each mining city are different. (4) The predicted RRCC of these cities would become stronger and the population overload would decrease in the next six years.

Bottom-up assessment of local agriculture, forestry and urban waste potentials towards energy autonomy of isolated regions: Example of Réunion

Green innovation integrates innovation-driven and green development strategies, which helps to realize the green transformation of production and life in the Yangtze River Delta region, and promote high-quality economic development. Based on the multidisciplinary cross attribute of system dynamics (SD), the boundary and influencing factors of the green innovation system are defined, and the system dynamics model of green innovation ability of science and technology enterprises is constructed. With the help of statistical data from 2010 to 2020, the model is simulated to explore the change trend and law of elements. The results show that: (1) The green innovation ability of science and technology enterprises is composed of three stages, knowledge innovation, technological innovation, and innovation application, which are interconnected and progressive. The change trend of each variable is conducive to the improvement of green innovation competitiveness, and the green innovation benefits are significant. (2) Green innovation is driven by multidimensional factors such as R&D investment, technological innovation investment, knowledge innovation ability, and the conversion rate of scientific research achievements. The improvement of the conversion rate of scientific research achievements has the greatest impact on the enterprise’s green innovation ability, and the change trend is more obvious. (3) Positive and negative two-direction sub-mode regulation of R&D investment, technological innovation investment, and scientific research achievement conversion coefficient will affect the speed of green innovation accumulation of enterprises, and this increment is marginally increasing with the increase of the coefficient in the short term. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to promote the green innovation ability of science and technology enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta.
