A multiple-access MIMO WLAN system that employs MIMO, OFDM, and TDD. The system (1) uses a channel structure with a number of configurable transport channels, (2) supports multiple rates and transmission modes, which are configurable based on channel conditions and user terminal capabilities, (3) employs a pilot structure with several types of pilot (e.g., beacon, MIMO, steered reference, and carrier pilots) for different functions, (4) implements rate, timing, and power control loops for proper system operation, and (5) employs random access for system access by the user terminals, fast acknowledgment, and quick resource assignments. Calibration may be performed to account for differences in the frequency responses of transmit/receive chains at the access point and user terminals. The spatial processing may then be simplified by taking advantage of the reciprocal nature of the downlink and uplink and the calibration.

MIMO WLAN system

A MIMO system supports multiple spatial multiplexing modes for improved performance and greater flexibility. These modes may include (1) a single-user steered mode that transmits multiple data streams on orthogonal spatial channels to a single receiver, (2) a single-user non-steered mode that transmits multiple data streams from multiple antennas to a single receiver without spatial processing at a transmitter, (3) a multi-user steered mode that transmits multiple data streams simultaneously to multiple receivers with spatial processing at a transmitter, and (4) a multi-user non-steered mode that transmits multiple data streams from multiple antennas (co-located or non co-located) without spatial processing at the transmitter(s) to receiver(s) having multiple antennas. For each set of user terminal(s) selected for data transmission on the downlink and/or uplink, a spatial multiplexing mode is selected for the user terminal set from among the multiple spatial multiplexing modes supported by the system.

Methods and apparatus for a data transmission in a communication system are disclosed. Each of a subset of plural access terminals desiring to transmit user data in an interval transmits a request to transmit in the interval to an access network. The access network makes a decision to schedule at least one of the subset of the plural access terminals to transmit in the interval in accordance with the request. At least one access point of the access network transmits the decision to the plural access terminals.

Method and system for a data transmission in a communication system

Pilots suitable for use in MIMO systems and capable of supporting various functions are described. The various types of pilot include - a beacon pilot, a MIMO pilot, a steered reference or steered pilot, and a carrier pilot. The beacon pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas and may be used for timing and frequency acquisition. The MIMO pilot is transmitted from all transmit antennas but is covered with different orthogonal codes assigned to the transmit antennas. The MIMO pilot may be used for channel estimation. The steered reference is transmitted on specific eigenmodes of a MIMO channel and is user terminal specific. The steered reference may be used for channel estimation. The carrier pilot may be transmitted on designated subbands/antennas and may be used for phase tracking of a carrier signal. Various pilot transmission schemes may be devised based on different combinations of these various types of pilot.

Pilots for mimo communication systems

For transmit diversity in a multi-antenna OFDM system, a transmitter encodes, interleaves, and symbol maps traffic data to obtain data symbols. The transmitter processes each pair of data symbols to obtain two pairs of transmit symbols for transmission from a pair of antennas either (1) in two OFDM symbol periods for space-time transmit diversity or (2) on two subbands for space-frequency transmit diversity. N T ·(N T −1)/2 different antenna pairs are used for data transmission, with different antenna pairs being used for adjacent subbands, where N T is the number of antennas. The system may support multiple OFDM symbol sizes. The same coding, interleaving, and modulation schemes are used for different OFDM symbol sizes to simplify the transmitter and receiver processing. The transmitter performs OFDM modulation on the transmit symbol stream for each antenna in accordance with the selected OFDM symbol size. The receiver performs the complementary processing.

Transmit diversity processing for a multi-antenna communication system

Disclosed is an apparatus for stopping iterative decoding in a turbo decoder performing iterative decoding on a received frame comprised of information bits and then outputting the iteratively decoded results. A turbo decoder sequentially outputs absolute LLR (Log Likelihood Ratio) values associated with the respective information bits of the received frame by the iterative decoding, and stops the iterative decoding in response to a stop command for the iterative decoding. A minimum LLR detector selects a minimum value M(i) among the sequentially output absolute LLR values. A controller issues a command to stop the iterative decoding, if the minimum value M(i) is larger than a first threshold determined based on a minimum value Fmin among absolute LLR values output through previous iterative decoding.

A puncturing device for a turbo encoder in a mobile communication system having a turbo encoder which turbo encodes input source data into a plurality of information frames and tail symbols at a given code rate is disclosed. The puncturing device comprises a frame generator for generating a transmission frame by performing puncturing and adding invalid symbols; and a controller for performing puncturing on the information frames according to the code rate, puncturing the tail symbols only when the number of punctured information frames and tail symbols exceeds a bit number according to a symbol rate, and otherwise, controlling the frame generator by reading a puncturing pattern according to the code rate and information about the number of invalid symbols.

Puncturing device and method for turbo encoder in mobile communication system

A data rate detecting device detects a data rate for a received signal based on a variation of the energy for the respective received signals between the two adjacent intervals upon failure to receive information about the data rate, and performs channel decoding of the detected data rate information. First, the data rate detecting device divides an interval defined as between a lowest and highest one of a plurality of given data rates into m discriminating intervals. Then, the device calculates a difference between an average energy of received signals up to an i'th discriminating interval and an average energy of received signals for an (i+1)'th discriminating interval, wherein i is an integer is less than m. If the difference between the average energies is greater than or equal to a threshold value, the device determines that the received signal in the (i+1)'th discriminating interval is transmitted at a data rate corresponding to the i'th discriminating interval.

Data rate detection device and method for a mobile communication system

There is provided a method for encoding input information bits by a quasi-complementary turbo code (QCTC) at a predetermined code rate to generate codeword symbols and transmitting the generated codeword symbols. The method comprises selecting one pattern among predetermined patterns corresponding to at least one of the generated codeword symbols in order to transmit the generated codeword symbols by a sub-packet length determined according to a data rate; reading information corresponding to the data rate, the sub-packet length and the selected pattern from a table in which identification information indicating the data rate, the sub-packet length and the selected pattern is previously mapped to given information; and transmitting the generated codeword symbols according to the read information and the selected pattern.

Reverse transmission apparatus and method for improving transmission throughput in a data communication system

Disclosed is provided a method and apparatus for mapping a stream of bits output from an encoder to a stream of bits for 2m-ary modulation. The method and apparatus divides the stream of bits from the encoder into a first period and a second period. The first period includes bits with higher priority in the stream of the bits output from the encoder, and the second period includes bits with lower priority. The method and apparatus maps the bits existing in the first period to bit positions with higher reliability in a stream of m bits representing each of the bits for 2m-ary modulation, and maps the bits existing in the second period to bit positions with lower reliability in the stream of m bits.
