A wireless communication method in a system in which subscriber stations are each operable for communication with a base station is provided. The base station is capable of performing simultaneous communications with a plurality of the subscriber stations simultaneously by exchange of packets each conforming with a layered protocol of said system. The packets include a first portion for defining physical layer (PHY) parameters and a second portion for defining media access layer (MAC) parameters. Furthermore, communications between the subscriber stations and the base station are performed wholly or partly through at least one relay station. In this system, the method includes, in the relay station, receiving a plurality of packets from the subscriber stations, detecting the second portion of each of the packets, combining the detected second portions to form a second portion of at least one new packet, and transmitting the new packet to the base station.

When increasing its data rate, the MS requests resource allocation to the BS by transmitting a BR header or a CQICH codeword. Compared to the conventional ertPS in which the BS periodically allocates uplink resources to the MS irrespective of the state of the MS, the BS does not allocate uplink resources when the MS transitions form a talk-spurt period to a silence period. An apparatus and method of processing handover of a mobile relay station (MRS) in a cellular communication system using a multihop relay scheme is provided. The handover processing method includes transmitting, by the MRS, a handover request message containing child node information to a serving BS when handover is required; making, by the serving BS, an adjacent node list by collecting handover-related information from adjacent nodes to which the MRS is able to be handed over when the handover request message is received; transmitting, by the serving BS, a handover response message containing the adjacent node list to the MRS; and determining, by the MRS, a handover target node based on information contained in the handover response message and transmitting a handover indication message containing the target node to the serving BS. By suggesting the handover method of the MRS in the multihop relay system, it is possible to provide uninterrupted communication to the MRS and its child node in the service area of the MRS.

Provided are an apparatus and a method for handling a handover in multi-hop relay Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system. In a communication method of a Relay Station (RS) in a multi-hop relay BWA system, a handover request message including a candidate node list is received from a Base Station (BS), the handover request message is sent to a Mobile Station (MS), and a handover indication message is received from the MS, the handover indication message indicating whether to perform a handover. Communication persistence can be provided for the MS having mobile characteristics, and cell load management and RS configuration/arrangement can be easily accomplished.
