Publisher Summary Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a linear effect that can be compensated in principle. In an ideal circularly symmetric fiber, the two orthogonally polarized modes have the same group delay. However, in reality, fibers exhibit a certain amount of birefringence because of imperfections in the manufacturing process or mechanical stress on the fiber after manufacture. It is noted that fluctuations in the polarization mode and fiber birefringence produced by the environment lead to dispersion that varies statistically with time and frequency. PMD causes different delays for different polarizations and when the difference in the delays approaches a significant fraction of the bit period, it leads to pulse distortion and system penalties. Environmental changes— including temperature and stress—cause the fiber PMD to vary stochastically in time. PMD, illustrating the basic concepts, the measurement techniques, the PMD measurement, the PMD statistics for first- and higher orders, the PMD simulation and emulation, the system impairments, and the mitigation methods has been summarized in the chapter. Both the optical and the electrical PMD compensations are considered.

Polarization-Mode Dispersion

A communications network has a plurality of nodes interconnected by an optical transmission medium. The transmission medium is capable of a carrying a plurality of wavelengths organized into bands. A filter at each node for drops a band associated therewith and passively forwards other bands through the transmission medium. A device is provided at each node for adding a band to the transmission medium. Communication can be established directly between a pair of nodes in the network sharing a common band without the active intervention of any intervening node. This allows the network to be protocol independent. Also, the low losses incurred by the passive filters permit relatively long path lengths without optical amplification.

Chapter 6 – Polarization Effects in Lightwave Systems

We have developed a millimeter-wave remote self-heterodyne transmission system that enables extremely stable and low-cost broad-band transmission in the millimeter-wave band. The system was applied to a 60-GHz-band transmission system for the first time. The transmitter of the developed system transmits RF modulated signals and a local oscillation signal simultaneously, and the receiver detects these signals by using a square-law-type detection technique, thus creating a very stable and low phase-noise millimeter-wave transmission link without the use of an expensive and more advanced frequency-stabilization technology. Since the receiver no longer requires a millimeter-wave oscillator for frequency conversion, the devices used in this system can be miniaturized and the cost of the system can be reduced. This paper discusses the performance of the developed system in terms of its phase-noise degradation and carrier-to-noise power ratio (CNR). We also discuss the optimal transmitter design to obtain the maximum CNR. Using our miniaturized monolithic millimeter-wave integrated-circuit-based 60-GHz-band experimental system, we demonstrate that our millimeter-wave transmission link is completely free of phase-noise and frequency-offset degradation due to the use of a millimeterwave local oscillator. We show that equal transmission-power distribution between the RF signal and local carrier gives the maximum CNR under the transmission-power-limited conditions. Also, we demonstrate that QPSK-modulated satellite broadcast multichannel video signals with a 300-MHz bandwidth, in total, can be successfully transferred over a distance of 8 m.

Millimeter-wave remote self-heterodyne system for extremely stable and low-cost broad-band signal transmission

Here we demonstrate theoretically that stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can induce a phase shift of the optical carrier relative to its sidebands due to the waveguiding effect of the optical fiber on the acoustic wave. This causes conversion of frequency modulation to intensity modulation, which results in an increase in the relative intensity noise and degradation of the modulation response of directly modulated lasers after propagation in an optical fiber, in agreement with our experimental observations. Suppression of SBS can be achieved at low frequencies and high modulation powers due to the laser adiabatic chirp.

Degradation of modulation and noise characteristics of semiconductor lasers after propagation in optical fiber due to a phase shift induced by stimulated Brillouin scattering

this paper describe the design and performance of all-fiber video distribution (AFVD) systems based on AM/FM FDM subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). The impact of applying EDFAs to SCM analog video distribution systems is investigated. AM/FM hybrid systems, which can simultaneously distribute 11 AM TV channels and 50 FM TV channels are proposed and discussed. Four-stage amplifier-branch transmission experiments are introduced. The construction and performance of a newly designed 50-channel FM tuner are also presented.
