An accumulative charging index is calculated by subtracting a charged capacity from a temporary full-charge capacity of the battery. The temporary full-charge capacity is corrected based on a difference between the map charging index and the accumulative charging index, thereby obtaining a corrected full-charge capacity. And, a dischargeable capacity of the battery is calculated by subtracting the discharged capacity from the corrected full-charge capacity.

PURPOSE:To increase the precision in detection and to enable the improvement in reliability, by a method wherein a residual capacity of an accumulator obtained by the integration of amounts of charge or discharge is subjected to interrupt correction by a residual capacity determined by a change in a terminal voltage or specific gravity. CONSTITUTION:A shunt 3 provided in a part of a wiring 1 connecting a power source or a load with a battery 2 converts a current into a voltage signal being proportional to a charge and a discharge. Subsequently, a clock signal obtained by a signal amplifier element 6 and a supplied voltage/frequency converter element 10 and the result of judgement by a charge/discharge detecting element 7 on the state of charge or discharge of the current flowing through the wiring 1 are supplied to a counter element 11. In the counter element 11, addition or subtraction is executed at the time of charge or discharge. Besides, a voltage detecting element 8 and a specific gravity detecting element 9 provided for the battery 2 detect a terminal voltage and the specific gravity of an electrolyte respectively. When the terminal voltage and the specific gravity of the electrolyte lower to the set values respectively and the residual capacity of the battery obtained by the integration of the amount of charge or discharge is faulty, interrupt correction is executed so that the residual capacity be the value determined from the terminal voltage or the specific gravity of the electrolyte.
