Review on the Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation for Large Deformation Analysis of Multibody Systems

The dynamic interaction between the catenary and the pantographs of high-speed trains is a very important factor that affects the stable electric power supply. In order to design a reliable current collection system, a multibody simulation model can provide an efficient and economical method to analyze the dynamic behavior of the catenary and pantograph. In this article, a dynamic analysis method for a pantograph–catenary system for a high-speed train is presented, employing absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body reference coordinates. The highly flexible catenary is modeled using a nonlinear continuous beam element, which is based on an absolute nodal coordinate formulation. The pantograph is modeled as a rigid multibody system. The analysis results are compared with experimental data obtained from a running high-speed train. Many previous studies have conducted computer-aided simulations ofelastic bodies undergoing large deflections and deformations, but therehave not been many attempts to validate their numerical results. Thesubject of this paper is a thin clamped plate undergone large vibrationdue to attached end-point weight. The main aim of this paper is to showthe validity of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) bycomparing to the real experiments. Large oscillations of thin plates arestudied in the paper with taking into account effects of an attachedend-point weight and aerodynamic damping forces. The physicalexperiments are carried out using a high-speed camera and dataacquisition system. For numerical modeling of the plate, the absolutenodal coordinate formulation is used.

Large Deflection Analysis of a Thin Plate: Computer Simulations and Experiments

Introducing internal damping in multibody system simulations is important as real-life systems usually exhibit this type of energy dissipation mechanism. When using an inertial coordinate method such as the absolute nodal coordinate formulation, damping forces must be carefully formulated in order not to damp rigid body motion, as both this and deformation are described by the same set of absolute nodal coordinates. This paper presents an internal damping model based on linear viscoelasticity for the absolute nodal coordinate formulation. A practical procedure for estimating the parameters that govern the dissipation of energy is proposed. The absence of energy dissipation under rigid body motion is demonstrated both analytically and numerically. Geometric nonlinearity is accounted for as deformations and deformation rates are evaluated by using the Green–Lagrange strain–displacement relationship. In addition, the resulting damping forces are functions of some constant matrices that can be calculated in advance, thereby avoiding the integration over the element volume each time the damping force vector is evaluated.

The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate the validity of one such numerical formulation, the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF), by comparing the results it generates with the results of real experiments. Large oscillations of a thin cantilever beam are studied in this paper to numerically model the beam, which also accounts for the effects of an attached end-point weight and damping forces. The experiments were carried out using a high-speed camera and a data acquisition system.

This report deals with the experimental study of seismic response behavior of piping systems in the industrial facilities such as petro-chemical plants and nuclear power plants. Special attention is focussed on the nonlinear dynamic response of piping systems due to frictional vibration appeared among piping and supporting devices. 3 dimensional mock-up piping model having 30 m Iength and 8 inches diameter is excited by large scale (15 m x 15 m) shaking table. Power spectra of the response vibration and loading-response relations in the form of hysteresis loop under several excitation levels are calculated. Response reduction effect caused by frictional vibration is evaluated and demonstrated in terms of "response reduction factor". Numerical simulation by use of nonlinear simplified friction model is also performed and calculated piping response is compared with those from vibration tests.
