A method is used for collecting information at the session level for a multiple node distributed processing system. A first component software program monitors all packets passing through a node and extracts packet headers having a predetermined format from all nodes. A second component software program identifies a session in which each of the extracted packet headers was transmitted and, for each session, accumulates characterizing information about that session and calculates statistical data concerning all the sessions.

A system and method for communicating audio data in a packet-based computer network wherein transmission of data packets through the computer network requires variable periods of transmission time. The system comprises: (1) a packet assembly circuit for constructing a data packet from a portion of a stream of digital audio data corresponding to an audio signal, the packet assembly circuit generating a position identifier indicating a temporal position of the portion relative to the stream, inserting the position identifier into the data packet and queuing the data packet for transmission through a backbone of the computer network and (2) a packet disassembly circuit, having a buffer associated therewith, for receiving the data packet from the backbone, the packet disassembly circuit inserting the portion into an absolute location of the buffer, the position identifier determining the location, the portion thereby synchronized with adjacent portions of the stream of digital audio data in the buffer to compensate for the variable periods of transmission time.

A distributed control apparatus and method is disclosed to maintain the network stability in a packet switching local area network under changing traffic load conditions, by controlling the size of the packets transmitted by each node. The invention monitors the present information flow rate in the network and computes an average packet length which it then uses to adjust the size of the variable length data field in each message frame. In this manner, network flow control can be achieved without forcing data terminals connected to the nodes of the network to adjust their speed. The invention is applicable to a wide variety of local area network protocols for both ring and bus architectures.

A wide area paging system is disclosed in which paging messages input to the system in one local area can be broadcast to a receiver in any other local area without necessarily broadcasting the message in all areas. A local area clearinghouse in each area stores resident subscriber data including current location and receiver serial number. This data is used to transfer messages over a data network to the correct clearinghouse. The system uses a TDM data protocol. The data is encoded and transmitted at a very high rate (e.g., 19,000 baud) in short packets (256 bits/13 milliseconds) via stereo FM sidebands. Receivers are assigned to receive sequentially numbered time slots matching a portion of their address. The addresses of intended receivers are included in the data packets. Battery-powered receivers are deactivated between packets and reactivated in accordance with the sequential time slot number scheme to receive an incoming packet. Messages longer than a packet are segmented and transmitted in two or more packets, linked together by data contained in the packets. A watch pager used in the system employs a wristband antenna which electromagnetically couples to the user's body. The watch pager displays time, telephone numbers and icons representing common types of paging messages.

PURPOSE: To make extra-high speed transmission possible by performing processings of the data link level and the packet level of data packets from a packet terminal by a main control part and outputting them to an external transmission line after storing them temporarily. CONSTITUTION: A communication control part 31 and a main control part 32 perform high-level data control and packet level control in the side of a subscriber's line 2. In an interface 36, an error check code is added to transmitted packets, and received packets are checked. Frames directed to this terminal itself which are transmitted through a token ring 30 are taken in, and the other frames are repeated and transmitted downstream. Packets whose transmission right is obtained by the token ring 30 are transmitted to a connecting device 38, and taken-in frames are transmitted to a trunk line 4' after being stored temporarily in a storage device, and received frames are handled similarly and are transmitted to the token ring 30.
