‘Values are principles and standards that have meaning and worth to an individual,family, group, or community’ (Purnell & Paulanka 1998: 3).Values are central to the care provided by nurses. The provision of nursing care within the context of value clarification, has been explored from various perspectives, however, as values vary within cultures, there is a limited range of studies reflecting on Saudi Arabian nurses' perspectives of nursing care.Through a Heideggerian phenomenological research design, six nurses were enrolled through purposive sampling. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews, which were audio tape-recorded, were chosen as the methods of data collection. Perception of nursing care: views of Saudi Arabian female nurses.

Saudi Arabia, like many areas of the world, is challenged by a nursing shortage. The World Health Organization (2004), reported that there is only 40 nurses for every 10,000 of the Saudi Arabia population. In 2010, it was found that there is a chronic nursing shortage of 30% that is worsened by heavy migration of nurses. The Saudi literature links the shortage in Saudi nurses to socio-cultural factors found to influence the prevailing negative images and perceived low status of nursing. Community image, family disagreement, cultural and communal values, long working hours, mixing with members of the opposite gender, and the worry of not being a "marriageable" prospect were the main reasons why Saudi females did not choose nursing as a career (Miligi & Selim 2013). The Saudi Arabian government has committed  enormous resources to improve health care, with the ultimate goal of providing free and accessible healthcare services for every Saudi national and expatriate working within the public sector (Al-Dossary et al., 2008). However, the nursing needs of Saudi Arabia far exceed the supply of Saudi nurses. Despite continued efforts to increase the number of Saudi nurses, by 2010, expatriate nurses still constituted 74% of the total nursing workforce in Saudi Arabia (Ministry of Health Annual Report 2010).  In Saudi Arabia, nursing is a less desirable career choice for Saudi nationals in comparison to other professions. Challenges Facing Nursing Profession in Saudi Arabia

Aim To examine the outlook of the Saudi Arabian nursing profession in relation to the recently launched Kingdom 2030 Vision. Introduction Nursing in Saudi Arabia has advanced noticeably in education and clinical practice, but challenges remain in building and sustaining a Saudi nursing profession and workforce. Background Health care in Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing transformation because of population and economic growth. These transformations have been influenced by the Saudi Arabian 2030 Vision. Sources of evidence A literature review here examines the progress in transforming the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia. Relevant studies published between 2001 and 2017 were identified, using databases such as Medline, PubMed and PsychInfo. Results Nineteen studies reporting challenges and opportunities that the nursing profession faces in Saudi Arabia were included. Discussion The nursing profession in Saudi Arabia faces challenges from nursing shortages, underdeveloped nursing education and unclear scope of practice. However, the new 2030 Vision offers many opportunities for social and economic transformation. Conclusion Effective strategies must be implemented to accommodate the new outlook the 2030 Saudi Vision in order to advance the nursing profession and to improve healthcare delivery in Saudi Arabia. Implications for nursing and nursing policy Nursing policymakers urgently need to improve nursing care in Saudi Arabia by addressing the nursing shortage, generating strategies to improve nursing education and establishing scope of practice guidelines. These critical issues must be addressed with the context of the 2030 Vision.

Arab Muslim nurses experiences of the meaning of caring

Global nursing shortages have necessitated closer scrutiny of recruitment and retention initiatives of nurses both locally and internationally. For many decades the nursing workforce of Saudi Arabia has relied on international expatriates to be the backbone of the industry. In recent years however, Saudi women have been recruited into nursing preparation courses conducted at degree level. The many twists and turns of providing a local Saudi Arabian nursing workforce has paralleled Saudi's own history and this paper follows that journey. Our research has enabled us to provide some insights into nursing pre and post the enlightenment that accompanied the Prophet Mohammed's influence. We emphasize the influences of women leaders who emerged in Mohammed's time and bring lasting authority to the development of nursing in Saudi Arabia. The cultural issues that bind women in this society are explicated and related to recruitment and retention issues in nursing. Education matters, both past and present, are highlighted emphasizing the gains that nursing as a distinct occupation has made. Finally the paper concludes with a summation of contemporary achievements in Saudi Arabia moving nursing towards the much needed professional status and parity with other careers in health care.

Historical, cultural and contemporary influences on the status of women in nursing in Saudi Arabia

This paper discusses a pragmatic and innovative approach to the data analysis of oral testimonies when used within a methodological framework of Historiography. Oral testimony is increasingly perceived as an exciting research method within the nursing discipline. However, the availability of a clear method to guide the researcher in their analysis of oral testimonies as the primary data for a Historiography is limited. A practical approach to the interpretation of oral testimony is needed to ensure the continued and successful use of Historiography as a valued research methodology in nursing science. The primary discussion revolves around the explication of a four-stage method proposed as a pragmatic tool for the analysis of oral testimonies. Theoretical literature from the Historian, Paul Thompson and Pragmatist Philosopher, Richard Rorty is drawn upon to bring validity and reliability to the proposed method of analysis. This new technique can be easily used by nurses and many other disciplines in their efforts to efficiently analyse the qualitative data obtained from oral testimonies.

A phenomenological study of student nurses volunteering in Nepal: Have their experiences altered their understanding of nursing?

Integrity, honesty, and respect are essential values for nursing students. Yet, in recent years the rise of breaches in academic integrity has become alarming. The era of increasing advances in the capabilities of smart technologies may be facilitating rather than deterring students from academic integrity breaches in their work and assessments. This issue raises questions for nurse academics on how they can best ensure that nursing students align their behavior with the expected nursing’s professional values, both during their study years and beyond. This discussion paper aims to examine contributing factors leading to breaches of academic integrity amongst nursing students and determine why we as nurse academics need to both remain alert to these factors, and vigilant about identifying and managing such breaches. Existing factors that may influence academic dishonesty are discussed concerning students; nurse academics; curriculum design; and the apparently growing cultural shift in ethical reasoning. With increased insight into these influencing factors, nurse academics need to take responsibility and prepare students to take on the highest standard of moral values to ensure safe and effective patient outcomes. We need to become more aware of and understand nursing students’ perspectives and adequately prepare our soon-to-become nurse graduates. We are charged with supporting, guiding, and teaching our students to develop skills within a culture of integrity. Ensuring an integrity activity smorgasbord in our practice can counteract the increased risk of academic dishonesty in our undergraduate nursing programs.
