Disclosed are composites that can exhibit low transmission energy loss and can also be temperature resistant. The composites include reinforcement fibers held in a polymeric matrix. The reinforcement fibers can include an amorphous polymer component. The fibers can be woven or knit to form a fabric or can be included in a nonwoven fabric. The composites can include other fibers as well, such as fiberglass. The composites can be multi-layer structures and can include layers of other materials, for instance layers formed of polyaramids, fiberglass, or carbon fiber wovens or nonwovens. The composites can advantageously be utilized in low loss dielectric applications, such as in forming circuit board substrates.

Methods can include forming amorphous thermoplastic polymer fibers, forming a fabric from the fibers, combining the fabric with reinforcement fibers, and molding the structure thus formed under heat and pressure such that the amorphous thermoplastic polymer flows and forms a polymeric matrix incorporating the reinforcement fibers. The composites can be molded from multi-layer structures that can include layers of differing materials, for instance layers formed of polyaramids, fiberglass, or carbon fiber wovens or nonwovens. The composites can advantageously be utilized in low loss dielectric applications, such as in forming circuit board substrates, radomes, antennas, and the like.

Method of Forming a Low Dielectric Loss Composite Material

Disclosed herein are polycarbonate fibers and fibrous substrates, such as papers, containing such fibers. The polycarbonate fibers are produced from a polymeric composition comprising a cross-linkable polycarbonate containing endgroups derived from a monofunctional benzophenone or containing repeating units derived from a difunctional benzophenone. The polycarbonate fibers can be combined with other fibers to form the fibrous substrate. Upon exposure to ultraviolet light, crosslinking of the polycarbonate fibers will occur, improving various properties of the fibrous substrate.

A conjugate polycarbonate fiber comprising 95% to 50% by weight of a polycarbonate component and 5 to 50% by weight of a polypropylene component wherein ultrafine fibers composed of the polypropylene component are dispersed and arranged in a bundle-like form in the polycarbonate component as the fiber matrix, whereby the crazing resistance and oil resistance are improved. The conjugate polycarbonate fiber can be made into fibrous sheets and non-woven fabrics. The non-woven fabrics are adapted to be used as insulating layers in electric power cables.
