On a single-input-single-out (SISO) interference channel (IC), conventional non-cooperative strategies encourage players selfishly maximizing their transmit data rates, neglecting the deficit of performance caused by and to other players. In the case of proper complex Gaussian noise, the maximum entropy theorem shows that the best-response strategy is to transmit with proper signals (symmetric complex Gaussian symbols). However, such equilibrium leads to degrees-of-freedom zero due to the saturation of interference. With improper signals (asymmetric complex Gaussian symbols), an extra freedom of optimization is available. In this paper, we study the impact of improper signaling on the 2-user SISO IC. We explore the achievable rate region with non-cooperative strategies by computing a Nash equilibrium of a non-cooperative game with improper signaling. Then, assuming cooperation between players, we study the achievable rate region of improper signals. We propose the usage of improper rank one signals for their simplicity and ease of implementation. Despite their simplicity, rank one signals achieve close to optimal sum rate compared to full rank improper signals. We characterize the Pareto boundary, the outer-boundary of the achievable rate region, of improper rank one signals with a single real-valued parameter; we compute the closed-form solution of the Pareto boundary with the non-zero-forcing strategies, the maximum sum rate point and the max-min fairness solution with zero-forcing strategies. Analysis on the extreme SNR regimes shows that proper signals maximize the wide-band slope of spectral efficiency whereas improper signals optimize the high-SNR power offset.

Improper Gaussian Signaling on the Two-User SISO Interference Channel

A method and system for reverse link interference cancellation. One method comprises demodulating and decoding at least one signal sent from at least one access terminal and received by a first base station, sending demodulated, decoded information of the signal to a second base station, reconstructing the signal at the second base station, and subtracting the reconstructed signal from a buffer at the second base station.

Reverse link interference cancellation

A receiver suppresses co-channel interference (CCI) from other transmitters and intersymbol interference (ISI) due to channel distortion using “virtual” antennas. The virtual antennas may be formed by (1) oversampling a received signal for each actual antenna at the receiver and/or (1) decomposing a sequence of complex-valued samples into a sequence of inphase samples and a sequence of quadrature samples. In one design, the receiver includes a pre-processor, an interference suppressor, and an equalizer. The pre-processor processes received samples for at least one actual antenna and generates at least two sequences of input samples for each actual antenna. The interference suppressor suppresses co-channel interference in the input sample sequences and provides at least one sequence of CCI-suppressed samples. The equalizer performs detection on the CCI-suppressed sample sequence(s) and provides detected bits. The interference suppressor and equalizer may be operated for one or multiple iterations.

Interference suppression with virtural antennas

Techniques to increase the capacity of a W-CDMA wireless communications system. In an exemplary embodiment, early termination (400) of one or more transport channels on a W-CDMA wireless communications link is provided. In particular, early decoding (421, 423) is performed on slots as they are received over the air, and techniques are described for signaling (431, 432) acknowledgment messages (ACK's) for one or more transport channels correctly decoded to terminate the transmission of those transport channels. The techniques may be applied to the transmission of voice signals using the adaptive multi-rate (AMR) codec. Further exemplary embodiments describe aspects to reduce the transmission power and rate of power control commands sent over the air, as well as aspects for applying tail-biting convolutional codes (1015) in the system.

Increasing capacity in wireless communications

A multi-stage interference suppression receiver includes a short equalizer section configured to operate on a first portion of a received signal received over a channel to produce a first equalized signal and a first estimate of the channel, a channel estimator section configured to operate on the first equalized signal to produce a second equalized signal, the channel estimator section comprising a linear estimator and a non-linear estimator, a long equalizer section configured to operate on a second portion of the received signal to produce a first estimate of symbols in the received signal and a second estimate of the channel and an interference canceller section configured to operate on the first estimate of symbols in the received signal to generate a second estimate of symbols in the received signal based on, at least in part, the second estimate of the channel.

It uses digitally I, in phase, and Q, quadrature, branches of a received transmitted signal as input to the receiver, a coarse synchronization and a coarse frequency offset compensation have being performed on the signal. It comprises a means for derotation, means for separation, means for filtering, means for estimating and means for detecting transmitted symbols in the received signal. The invention thereby improving co-channel rejection in wireless communication, thus making it possible to increase the number of communication channels for frequencies used.
