Incorporation of metal-organic frameworks into electrospun chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous membrane with enhanced antibacterial activity for wound dressing application.

A number of inorganic compounds, including anions such as nitrate(V), chlorate(VII), bromate (V), arsenate(III) and (V), borate and fluoride as well as metals forming anions under certain conditions, have been found in potentially harmful concentrations in numerous water sources. The maximum allowed levels of these compounds in drinking water set by the WHO and a number of countries are very low (in the range of µg/l to a few mg/l), thus the majority of them can be referred to as charged micropollutants. Several common treatment technologies which are nowadays used for removal of inorganic contaminants from natural water supplies, rep- resent serious exploitation problems. Membrane processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) in hybrid systems, Donnan dialysis (DD) and electrodialysis (ED) as well as membrane bioreactors (MBR), if properly selected, offer the advantage of producing high quality drinking water without inorganic anions.

Membrane techniques in the removal of inorganic anionic micropollutants from water environment - state of the art

In the current work the physicochemical features of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) biofilms, enriched with eco-friendly polyols and with carotenoid-rich extracts, were investigated. The polyols, such as glycerol (Gly), 1,3-propanediol (PDO), and 2,3-butanediol (BDO) were used as plasticizers and the tomato-based pigments (TP) as coloring agents. The outcomes showed that β-carotene was the major carotenoid in the TP (1.605 mg β-carotene/100 DW), which imprinted the orange color to the biofilms. The flow behavior indicated that with the increase of shear rate the viscosity of biofilm solutions also increased until 50 s-1, reaching values at 37 °C of approximately 9 ± 0.5 mPa·s for PVOH, and for PVOH+TP, 14 ± 0.5 mPa·s in combination with Gly, PDO, and BDO. The weight, thickness, and density of samples increased with the addition of polyols and TP. Biofilms with TP had lower transparency values compared with control biofilms (without vegetal pigments). The presence of BDO, especially, but also of PDO and glycerol in biofilms created strong bonds within the PVOH matrix by increasing their mechanical resistance. The novelty of the present approach relies on the replacement of synthetic colorants with natural pigments derived from agro-industrial by-products, and the use of a combination of biodegradable polymers and polyols, as an integrated solution for packaging application in the bioplastic industry.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Biofilms Plasticized with Polyols and Colored with Pigments Extracted from Tomato By-Products.

Photocatalysis process belongs to an advanced oxidation technology for the removal of persistent organic compounds and microorganisms from water. It is the technology with a great potential, a low-cost, environmental friendly and sustainable treatment technology to align with the “zero” waste scheme in the water/wastewater industry. At present, the main technical barriers that impede its full commercialization remained on the post-recovery of the catalyst particles after water treatment. This paper reviews the background of the process and photooxidation mechanisms of the organic pollutants and microorganisms. The review of the latest progresses of engineered-photocatalysts, photo-reactor systems, and the kinetics and modeling associated with the photocatalytic and photodisinfection water and wastewater treatment process, has been presented. A number of potential and commercial photocatalytic reactor configurations are discussed, in particular the photocatalytic membrane reactors. The effects of key photo-reactor operation parameters and water quality on the photoprocess performances in terms of the mineralization and disinfection are assessed.

Woda do picia zawierająca substancje biologicznie aktywne, tj. wirusy, bakterie i pierwotniaki, a takze inne mikroorganizmy (grzyby, glony, ślimaki, robaki i skorupiaki), stanowi istotne zagrozenie zdrowotne. Dotyczy to rowniez ściekow oczyszczonych jak i nieoczyszczonych odprowadzanych do odbiornikow wodnych. W polskich przepisach prawnych jakości wody do picia normowane są Escherichia coli i Enterokoki, ktore nie mogą w niej wystepowac, a wymaganiach dodatkowych bakterie grupy coli, ogolna liczba mikroorganizmow oraz Clostridium perfringens. Ultrafiltracja (UF) i mikrofiltracja (MF) mogą wspomoc i polepszyc proces dezynfekcji wody metodami tradycyjnymi, poniewaz membrana stanowi bariere dla wirusow, bakterii i pierwotniakow. Wielkośc wirusow waha sie w granicach 20-80 nm, podczas gdy membrany UF mają wielkośc porow okolo 10 nm, a wiec teoretycznie mozliwe jest ich calkowite zatrzymanie. Natomiast bakterie (0,5-10 μm) oraz cysty i ocysty (3-15 μm) są wieksze i calkowite ich usuniecie jest praktycznie mozliwe przy uzyciu membran UF oraz MF, poniewaz dla membran dostepnych komercyjnie, wielkośc porow jest z reguly mniejsza od 0,3 μm. Porownanie, wiec wielkości porow membran UF/MF i wielkości mikroorganizmow, wskazuje, ze ultrafiltracja i/lub mikrofiltracja gwarantują teoretycznie wlaściwe usuniecie mikroorganizmow z wody i ściekow. W latach 80. wzroslo zainteresowanie nanofiltracją i w pewnym zakresie odwroconą osmoze jako metodami zmiekczania wody, natomiast w latach 90. zaczeto je stosowac do usuwania prekursorow produktow ubocznych dezynfekcji (NOM) oraz mikrozanieczyszczen. Ciśnieniowe procesy membranowe (RO, NF, UF i MF) stanowią skuteczną metode usuwania rozpuszczalnych w wodzie związkow organicznych (DOC) w uzdatnianiu wod naturalnych. Naturalna substancja organiczna (NOM), zanieczyszczenia antropogeniczne oraz uboczne produkty dezynfekcji (DBP) i inne mikrozanieczyszczenia są typowymi przykladami tego rodzaju związkow. Glowną potencjalną mozliwością technik membranowych w oczyszczaniu wody powierzchniowej jest usuwanie prekursorow DBP, obejmujących cześc NOM. Do mikrozanieczyszczen antropogenicznych wystepujących w wodach nalezy zliczyc wielopierścieniowe weglowodory aromatyczne (WWA) i substancje powierzchniowo-czynne oraz wtorne produkty dezynfekcji i utleniania chemicznego, stosowane w uzdatnianiu wody do picia. W procesach tych najwiecej powstaje lotnych trihalometanow (THM), a z grupy związkow nielotnych tworzą sie glownie halogenopochodne kwasow karboksylowych (HAA). W ostatnim okresie zwraca sie szczegolną uwage na wystepujące w wodach naturalnych mikrozanieczyszczenia organiczne aktywne farmaceutycznie PhACs (Pharmaceutical Active Compounds) jak i o potwierdzonej estrogenicznej aktywności biologicznej EDCs (Endocrine Disrupting Compounds) Do ECDs zalicza sie szeroką game mikrozanieczyszczen, a mianowicie: ksenoestrogeny, wśrod ktorych wymienia sie chlorowane pestycydy i herbicydy, alkilofenole, polichlorowane bifenyle, ftalany, naturalne związki chemiczne produkowane przez grzyby (w tym toksyny tzw. mykoestrogeny) i rośliny (fitoestrogeny), oraz zenskie hormony plciowe, syntetyczne farmaceutyki (np. skladniki środkow antykoncepcyjnych) oraz inne związki chemiczne i substancje wytwarzane przez czlowieka i wprowadzane do środowiska. Problemem w eksploatacji technik membranowych jest „fouling” membran, powodujący ciągly spadek wydajności membrany w czasie oraz pogarszanie sie jakości permeatu. Jako metody zapobiegające „foulingowi” wymienia sie obecnie procesy wstepnego przygotowania wody przed filtracją membranową, takie jak koagulacja, adsorpcja na weglu aktywnym, filtracja biologiczna, utlenianie.
