PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound, having excellent antifungal action and useful as an antifungal agent. CONSTITUTION:The compound of the formula or its salt. Properties: white powder; molecular formula: C28H36O10; solubility: readily soluble in methanol, ethyl acetate, etc., and sparingly soluble in n-hexane and water; division of acidic, neutral and basic substances: weakly acidic substance and color reaction: positive to the potassium permanganate reaction and sulfuric acid reaction. A microorganism capable of producing the compound [e.g. Penicillium sp. F31405 strain (FERM P-132121) which is a new microorganism] is preferably cultured according to a shaking culture method or a submerged spinner culture method under aeration and the compound is then obtained from the resultant culture filtrate. Furthermore, the culturing is preferably carried out at 25-30 deg.C and pH4-8 for 120-216hr.

SOLUTION: This antitumor substance comprises a compound represented by the formula as an active ingredient. Furthermore, the compound is preferably prepared by culturing a microorganism having the ability to produce the compound represented by the formula or its variant strain (e.g. FERM P-15625) under culture conditions, e.g. 38 deg.C and pH3-10.5 for about 240-288hr by the shaking culture and collecting the compound from the microbial cell thereof. The physicochemical properties of the compound are as follows: Property: a white amorphous solid or crystal ; molecular formula: C23 H32 O6 ; mass spectrometry: found: 405.2269, calculated: 405.2277; specific rotatory power: [α] D=+62.2 deg. (c 1.0, CHCl3 ); solubility: readily soluble in organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide and slightly soluble in water; division of acidic, neutral and basic substances: a neutral substance; color reaction: positive to the sulfuric reaction.

Solubility: readily soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide, soluble in chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol, insoluble in water. Distinction of acid, neutral or basic substance: acidic substance. Color reaction: positive in iodine reaction, potassium permanganate reaction and 2,4dinitrophenylhydrazine reaction. The compound of the formula is obtained by culturing a fungus belonging to the genus Talaromyces, capable of producing the compound of the formula, such as Talaromyces retardatus F24811 (FERM P-14,103). This compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III or IV [Y is H or (substituted)lower alkyl] {e.g. 12,13-dihydro-1,11-dihydroxy-13(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)-5H-indolo[2,3-a ]pyrro1 o[3,4-c]carbazol-5,7(6H)-dione} is made to react with a compound of formula V (R13 and R23 are H, lower alkenyl, etc.) in a solvent, e.g. N,N- dimethylformamide at preferably ambient temperature to 80 deg.C and, as necessary, deprotecting the resultant product. Furthermore, the compound of formula IV is a new compound and preferably obtained by treating the compound of formula III with a base.
