An on-board inert gas generating system (OBIGGS) uses a turbine in order to recover the energy of compression of the nitrogen-enriched product gas. This energy is transferred, through a shaft, to the compressor, which supplies compressed air to the separation membrane. Unlike conventional systems, where there is no means for recovering the energy of the compressed nitrogen enriched product air, the present system provides a cooled nitrogen-enriched gas to be supplied to a fuel tank ullage without losing the energy stored in the compressed nitrogen-enriched product gas.

An apparatus, system and method for suppression of fires are provided. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a housing is provided with a first opening (or set of openings), a second opening (or set of openings) and a flow path defined between the first and second openings. A fire-suppressing gas is produced, such as from a solid propellant composition, and is introduced into the flow path in such a way that a volume of ambient air is drawn from a location external to the housing, through the first opening and into the flow path. The volume of ambient air may be subjected to an oxygen-reducing process and mixed with the fire-suppressing gas to form a gas mixture. The gas mixture is discharged from the flow path through the second opening and into an associated environment for suppression of a fire located therein.

Method and apparatus for suppression of fires

Disclosed is an inert gas generator to produce a large quantity of inert gas within a short period of time. The inert gas generator comprises: a gas turbine consisting of a starter motor, compressor, combustor and turbine body; an afterburner being connected to a exit of the gas turbine to re-burn gas burned in the combustor and being equipped with a flame stabilizer; a cooling chamber being equipped with spray nozzles to eject water to decrease gas temperature in the afterburner exit; an evaporator set to further cool the gas-steam mixture from the afterburner; a cooling chamber and spray nozzles; an exhaust nozzle to guide the direction of the inert gas-steam mixture of low temperature and oxygen content; and a controller for controlling the starter motor, the fuel pump and combustor. The inert gas generator mounted on a movable vehicle can promptly suppress the fire occurred in various places with least amount cost possible.

A method for subduing a fire is described. A fire is intentionally set in front of a larger advancing fire to create a back burn. A vehicle supporting a jet turbine is moved to a front of the back burn. The jet turbine is operated to draw surrounding, ambient air therein and therethrough to form an exhaust. The burning of the back burn is accelerated by directing the exhaust either directly at or to the front of the of the back burn. The back burn leaves a swatch of burned land in the path of the advancing larger fire providing a reduced supply of fuel for the advancing larger fire to burn once the larger advancing fire reaches the swatch.

Method of Extinguishing Fires

A fire suppression system for producing an inert gas mixture having a minimal amount of carbon monoxide, particulates, or smoke. The inert gas mixture may be generated by combusting a gas generant. The gas generant may be a composition that includes hexa (ammine)-cobalt(III)-nitrate. The fire suppression system also includes a heat management system to reduce a temperature of the inert gas mixture. A method of extinguishing fires is also disclosed.

Man-rated fire suppression system

Installed at the outlet of the afterburning chamber is a diffuser whose narrow section forms a base for the afterburning chamber. The joint between the afterburning chamber and the diffuser is enclosed by a depression chamber which has a manifold with a circular slot for admitting compressed inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, from the outside. The diffuser accommodates a nozzle for feeding freon into the discharged gas flow. This increases the capacity, head and fire-fighting efficiency of the generator.
