The invention in one respect includes reading data from a multipoint sensing device such as a multipoint touch screen where the data pertains to touch input with respect to the multipoint sensing device, and identifying at least one multipoint gesture based on the data from the multipoint sensing device.

A user can access a common database from a remote communications port, at any qualified location, to generate a map or other positional information which locates selected items of interest, e.g., businesses, stores, architectural sites, and the like. The database contains information representing the items of interest, including, for each of the items of interest, positional coordinates, a geographic vicinity, and a selected category. The positional coordinates discretely locate the vicinity, while the vicinity specifies the exact locations of the items of interest in the selected category. For example, a user in New York can select the display of sporting shops in the area surrounding Chicago O'Hara International Airport selectively. A user can also access a port and display locations of items of interest within the same vicinity as the user and relative to the user's position. The database can be modified from qualified remote locations to change, or add to, the information therein. An advertisement can be tagged to the display or print out as an association with the selected items of interest.

The first display segment 530 includes a digitized representation of a selected area from a raster map, intelligent area data superimposed upon the selected area to provide intelligence, and a user locatable mark 520. The user locatable mark 520 defines a mobile unit position based upon a first value and a second value. The present method also includes using a dispatch system 811 operably coupled to the display. The dispatch system 811 includes order data from customers. A portion of the order data is transferred from a data acquisition 801, 808 device to the mobile unit 610.

Method and apparatus for tracking vehicle location

A vehicle navigator is disclosed, in which in response to a storage command signal generated by the turning on of a storage switch, the present position data of a vehicle corresponding to the present cursor position is stored in a memory. In response to a set command signal subsequently generated by the turning on of a set switch, the running track data between the latest position stored and the present cursor position is stored in the memory, so that the running track is additionally displayed on a road map display device.

Navigator for vehicles

In a vehicle-mounted navigator, a control unit reads map data from a memory unit and displays a corresponding road map on a CRT display unit. In response to signals from a distance sensor and a direction sensor, the present position in relation to the running of the automotive vehicle is computed to display by superimposition the present position on the road map display of the display unit. When the computed present position has reached to a predetermined portion of an adjacent area, the map data of the road map adjacent to the road map on display is read from the memory unit and a corresponding road map is displayed on the display unit manually or automatically. In accordance with this updated display, the present position display is moved to a corresponding position on the updated road map display.

Vehicle-mounted navigator

An automotive navigator using a microcomputer displays a car position by a cursor on a road map displayed on a CRT screen (6). The navigator uses a cassette tape (3a) which stores a plurality of road map data and several kinds of reduced map data and expanded map data. It also uses a group of manual switches (7, 8) including a switch for changing the displayed area, a switch for selecting an expanded map or reduced map and a switch for moving the cursor position. Necessary data are displayed on the screen by the state of each switch. A region corresponding to the cursor position is displayed by the expanded map.

Electronic navigator for automotive vehicles

In a navigation system arranged to display a road map in accordance with road map information from a cassette tape, and the present location of a motor vehicle equipped with the navigation system, a cassette tape distinguishing circuit is provided to a cassette tape player which picks up the road map information from a predetermined cassette having a window at given portion of the cassette housing. A switching circuit is responsive to the cassette tape distinguishing circuit so that the output data of the cassette tape is processed to display a given map only when a cassette carrying road map information is loaded in the cassette tape player. In the case a normal cassette carrying audio signals, such as music, is loaded the picked up audio signal is transmitted to an amplifier so that sound reproduction is effected. Thus, a single cassette player can be used in common as both a part of the navigation system and a part of a sound reproduction system.

Navigation system for use with an automobile and reading unit for the system

PURPOSE: To read data of a road map of a different measure by a measure change indication and switch and display automatically this data, by storing map data for display of a specific road map and map data of a different measure on a tape. CONSTITUTION: A navigator device where signals from a distance sensor 2 and a direction detecting device 1 are given to a microcomputer 4 and the current position is operated and is displayed on a device 6 is provided with a cassette tape 3a, where map data for display of a specific road map and data of a road map different in measure from this specific road map are stored, and a map changeover switch part 8 which generates the measure change indication for a displaying road map. Map data is read out from the cassette tape by a controlling means consisting of a reader 3, the microcomputer 4, and a CRT controller 5 to display a road map on a CRT, and data of a road map different in measure from the displaying road map is read out from the cassette tape by the change indication from the changeover switch part 8 and is switched and displayed.
