The composite structure is bendable at the flexible section to permit repeated rotation of the first composite section relative to the second composite section by more than 90 degrees.

A method for cutting passages in an airfoil using a liquid-jet guided laser beam includes positioning a frustoconical tip of the liquid-jet guided laser at a first X, Y and Z location that is defined with respect to the airfoil and at a first standoff distance of greater than 5 mm and less than 20 mm from an outer surface of the airfoil. The method also includes generating a laser beam confined within a fluid column via the liquid jet guided laser, wherein the laser beam is aimed at the outer surface. The method further includes monitoring for breakthrough of the laser beam through an inner surface of an inner cavity of the airfoil, shutting off the laser beam once breakthrough is detected and repositioning the frustoconical tip at a second X, Y and Z location and at a second standoff distance. The invention discloses an electrotome surface laser grooving and polishing integral machining method. The method comprises the following steps: (1) a metal high-frequency electrotome sample is ultrasonically cleaned by alcohol, and is dried; (2) a picosecond fiber laser with a pulse width of 600 ps is used for setting a laser scanning area of 4 mm*15 mm to machine a microgroove in the surface of the electrotome; (3) the machined electrotome is ultrasonically cleaned; (4) a nanosecond pulse laser with a pulse width of 220 ns is used for setting a laser scanning area of 6 mm*20 mm to polish the microgroove area on the surface of the electrotome; and (5) the machined electrotome is ultrasonically cleaned. The method can improve the electrotome bonding problem in operations, and polishes the surface to facilitate relief of the corrosion failure of the electrotome and prolonging of the service life of the electrotome. The method uses the advantages of a laser micromachining technology for efficiently and precisely prepare a microstructure on the surface of the electrotome by using a laser direct writing system; and the machining area and the machining range can be adjusted according to actual demands.

A method of laser machining of a fiber-reinforced composite material of the present invention is characterized in that the fiber-reinforced composite material or composite ply material (ply material consisting of plates of metal or inorganic material and fiber-reinforced material) is cut using an ultra short pulse solid-state laser having a pulse-width ranging from 10 pico to 100 nano second and a pulse energy of 1mJ-500J, repeatedly irradiated to the material with the number of frequency ranging from 10Hz to 100kHz. According to the present invention, it is possible to work, e.g., cut, pierce, groove, or carve a fiber-reinforced composite material including CFRP, by removing materials by means of a laser with a high precision and good quality. It is also possible to form a fitting joint of proper shape so that a male-female joint may be available in a butt welding that has been hardly feasible. It is further possible to produce structural members such as a light weight panel or a H-column because the male-female joint can be used for a plate of any desired dimension (width, length and thickness).
