A gas turbine comprises: a first closed circuit in which cooling gas is supplied to a casing, allowed to pass through stationary blades, and removed to the outside of casing after cooling the stationary blades; a second closed circuit in which cooling air is supplied to the casing, allowed to pass through moving blades, and removed to the outside of casing after cooling the moving blades; a cooler for cooling the cooling gas in the first and second closed circuits; and a booster for pressurizing and circulating the cooling gas cooled by the cooler. Methods and apparatus for maintaining rotor assembly tip clearances

Aspects of the invention relate to a system and method for actively controlling compressor clearances in a turbine engine by passing a thermal fluid in heat exchanging relation through a compressor vane carrier. During some operational conditions, such as hot restart or spin cool, it may be desirable to heat the vane carrier to enlarge or at least prevent a decrease in compressor clearances. In such cases, a heated thermal fluid can be provided by reclaiming residual exhaust energy from a heat recovery steam generator. At any condition where improved performance is desired, such as at base load operation, the vane carrier can be cooled to minimize compressor clearances. A cooled thermal fluid can be bleed air from an upstream portion of the compressor, water-cooled high pressure bleed air from a downstream portion of the compressor, or feed water from the bottoming cycle in a combined cycle engine.

System for actively controlling compressor clearances

The clearance control system includes a closed air circuit having a heat exchanger, a circulation compressor and an air heater in series for flowing air heated or cooled to higher and lower system-set discharge temperatures in the casing of rotating machinery to expand or contract the casing, respectively, to maintain optimum clearances between the rotating blade tips and the casing. At start-up, the air heater is energized to supply heated air to and expand the casing. During start-up and subsequent to this initial phase, the air heater is deenergized and the air cooling system is actuated by closing a heat exchanger bypass valve and opening a shutoff valve, enabling the air to be cooled in the heat exchanger. By controlling the flow of coolant to the heat exchanger, the lower set discharge temperature of the air exiting the circulation compressor can be regulated during steady-state operation to maintain the casing contracted for optimal clearance.

A turbine includes a plurality of inner shell sections mounting first and second stage nozzle and shroud portions. The inner shell sections are pinned to an outer containment shell formed of sections to preclude circumferential movement of the inner shell relative to the outer shell and enable thermal expansion and contraction of the inner shell relative to the outer shell. Positive bucket tip clearance control is afforded by passing a thermal medium about the inner shell in heat transfer relation with the shrouds about the first and second stage bucket tips, the thermal medium being provided from a source of heating/cooling fluid independent of the turbine. Access is provided to the rotor and turbine buckets by removing the outer and inner shell sections.
