It is possible to say that zeolites are the most widely used catalysts in industry They are crystalline microporous materials which have become extremely successful as catalysts for oil refining, petrochemistry, and organic synthesis in the production of fine and speciality chemicals, particularly when dealing with molecules having kinetic diameters below 10 A The reason for their success in catalysis is related to the following specific features of these materials:1 (1) They have very high surface area and adsorption capacity (2) The adsorption properties of the zeolites can be controlled, and they can be varied from hydrophobic to hydrophilic type materials (3) Active sites, such as acid sites for instance, can be generated in the framework and their strength and concentration can be tailored for a particular application (4) The sizes of their channels and cavities are in the range typical for many molecules of interest (5-12 A), and the strong electric fields2 existing in those micropores together with an electronic confinement of the guest molecules3 are responsible for a preactivation of the reactants (5) Their intricate channel structure allows the zeolites to present different types of shape selectivity, ie, product, reactant, and transition state, which can be used to direct a given catalytic reaction toward the desired product avoiding undesired side reactions (6) All of these properties of zeolites, which are of paramount importance in catalysis and make them attractive choices for the types of processes listed above, are ultimately dependent on the thermal and hydrothermal stability of these materials In the case of zeolites, they can be activated to produce very stable materials not just resistant to heat and steam but also to chemical attacks Avelino Corma Canos was born in Moncofar, Spain, in 1951 He studied chemistry at the Universidad de Valencia (1967−1973) and received his PhD at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1976 He became director of the Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica (UPV-CSIC) at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia in 1990 His current research field is zeolites as catalysts, covering aspects of synthesis, characterization and reactivity in acid−base and redox catalysis A Corma has written about 250 articles on these subjects in international journals, three books, and a number of reviews and book chapters He is a member of the Editorial Board of Zeolites, Catalysis Review Science and Engineering, Catalysis Letters, Applied Catalysis, Journal of Molecular Catalysis, Research Trends, CaTTech, and Journal of the Chemical Society, Chemical Communications A Corma is coauthor of 20 patents, five of them being for commercial applications He has been awarded with the Dupont Award on new materials (1995), and the Spanish National Award “Leonardo Torres Quevedo” on Technology Research (1996) 2373 Chem Rev 1997, 97, 2373−2419

From Microporous to Mesoporous Molecular-Sieve Materials and Their Use in Catalysis

Titanium silicalite is an effective molecular-sieve catalyst for the selective oxidation of alkanes, the hydroxylation of phenol and the epoxidation of alkenes in the presence of H2O2 (refs 1-3). The range of organic compounds that can be oxidized is greatly limited, however, by the relatively small pore size (about 0.6 nm) of the host framework. Large-pore (mesoporous) silica-based molecular sieves have been prepared recently by Kresge et al. and Kuroda et al.; the former used a templating approach in which the formation of an inorganic mesoporous structure is assisted by self-organization of surfactants, and the latter involved topochemical rearrangement of a layered silica precursor. Here we describe the use of the templating approach to synthesize mesoporous silica-based molecular sieves partly substituted with titanium--large-pore analogues of titanium silicalite. We find that these materials show selective catalytic activity towards the oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol to the corresponding quinone and the conversion of benzene to phenol.

Titanium-containing mesoporous molecular sieves for catalytic oxidation of aromatic compounds

There is increased recognition by the world’s scientific, industrial, and political communities that the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the earth’s
atmosphere, particularly CO_2, are increasing. For
example, recent studies of Antarctic ice cores to
depths of over 3600 m, spanning over 420 000 years,
indicate an 80 ppm increase in atmospheric CO_2 in
the past 200 years (with most of this increase
occurring in the past 50 years) compared to the
previous 80 ppm increase that required 10 000 years.2
The 160 nation Framework Convention for Climate
Change (FCCC) in Kyoto focused world attention on
possible links between CO2 and future climate change
and active discussion of these issues continues.3 In
the United States, the PCAST report4 “Federal
Energy Research and Development for the Challenges
of the Twenty First Century” focused attention
on the growing worldwide demand for energy and the
need to move away from current fossil fuel utilization.
According to the U.S. DOE Energy Information
Administration,5 carbon emission from the transportation
(air, ground, sea), industrial (heavy manufacturing,
agriculture, construction, mining, chemicals,
petroleum), buildings (internal heating, cooling, lighting),
and electrical (power generation) sectors of the
World economy amounted to ca. 1823 million metric
tons (MMT) in 1990, with an estimated increase to
2466 MMT in 2008-2012 (Table 1).

Selective Vapor-Phase Epoxidation of Propylene over Au/TiO2Catalysts in the Presence of Oxygen and Hydrogen

BECAUSE of the chemical inertness of alkanes, the introduction of functional groups into them by oxidation has tended to require severe and thus unselective conditions. The homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts used for alkene oxidation are ineffective for alkanes1,2. Cleavage of carbon–carbon bonds in the presence of transition metal complexes effects mainly complete oxidation to acids2, although some selectivity is occasionally possible3. Oxyfunctionalization without C–C bond cleavage has also been achieved2,4,5, and high selectivity may be obtained from natural or synthetic metalloporphyrin systems6,7. Here we show that titanium silicalite, a microporous crystalline Ti-silica8, is able to activate secondary and tertiary carbon atoms in alkanes, so that they may be oxidized to alcohols and subsequently to ketones using aqueous H2O2. The catalyst has low regioselectivity for alcohol formation but high reactant selectivity in the formation of ketones.
