Spin glasses are founded in the frustration and randomness of microscopic magnetic interactions. They are non-ergodic systems where replica symmetry is broken. Although magnetic glassy behaviour has been observed in many colossal magnetoresistive manganites, there is no consensus that they are spin glasses. Here, an intriguing glass transition in (La,Pr,Ca)MnO3 is imaged using a variable-temperature magnetic force microscope. In contrast to the speculated spin-glass picture, our results show that the observed static magnetic configuration seen below the glass-transition temperature arises from the cooperative freezing of the first-order antiferromagnetic (charge ordered) to ferromagnetic transition. Our data also suggest that accommodation strain is important in the kinetics of the phase transition. This cooperative freezing idea has been applied to structural glasses including window glasses and supercooled liquids, and may be applicable across many systems to any first-order phase transition occurring on a complex free-energy landscape.

Magnetic imaging of a supercooling glass transition in a weakly disordered ferromagnet.

Complex oxide films are highly anisotropic in the way they conduct electricity, which is due to phase separation. However, the origin of this metal–insulator phase coexistence has been unclear. Transport measurements now show that strain, rather than chemical inhomogeneity, is mainly responsible. The presence of electronic phase separation in complex materials has been linked to many types of exotic behaviour, such as colossal magnetoresistance, the metal–insulator transition and high-temperature superconductivity1,2,3,4; however, the mechanisms that drive the formation of coexisting electronic phases are still debated5,6,7,8. Here we report transport measurements that show a preferential orientation of electronic phase domains driven by anisotropic long-range elastic coupling between a complex oxide film and substrate. We induce anisotropic electronic-domain formation along one axis of a pseudocubic perovskite single-crystal thin-film manganite by epitaxially locking it to an orthorhombic substrate. Simultaneous temperature-dependent resistivity measurements along the two perpendicular in-plane axes show substantial differences in the metal–insulator transition temperature and extraordinarily high anisotropic resistivities, which indicate that percolative conduction channels open more readily along one axis. These findings suggest that the origin of phase coexistence is much more strongly influenced by strain than by local chemical inhomogeneity.

Elastically driven anisotropic percolation in electronic phase-separated manganites

Evidence of a magnetic glass state in the magnetocaloric material Gd 5 Ge 4

The review is devoted to the elucidation of the basic problems arising in the theoretical investigation of systems with Bose-Einstein condensate. Understanding these challenging problems is necessary for the correct description of Bose-condensed systems. The principal problems considered in the review are as follows: (i) What is the relation between Bose-Einstein condensation and global gauge symmetry breaking? (ii) How to resolve the Hohenberg-Martin dilemma of conserving versus gapless theories? (iii) How to describe Bose-condensed systems in strong spatially random potentials? (iv) Whether thermodynamically anomalous fluctuations in Bose systems are admissible? (v) How to create nonground-state condensates? Detailed answers to these questions are given in the review. As examples of nonequilibrium condensates, three cases are described: coherent modes, turbulent superfluids, and heterophase fluids.

Basics of Bose-Einstein Condensation

A detailed investigation of the first-order antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) to ferromagnetic metal (FMM) transition in Nd 0.5 Sr 0.5 MnO 3 is carried out by resistivity and magnetization measurements. These studies reveal several anomalous features of thermomagnetic irreversibility across the first-order transition. We show that these anomalous features cannot be explained in terms of the supercooling effect alone and the H-T diagram based on isothermal M-H or R-H measurements alone does not reflect the true nature of the first-order transition in this compound. Our investigations reveal glass-like arrest of kinetics at low temperature which plays a dominant role in the anomalous thermomagnetic irreversibility observed in this system. The interplay between kinetic arrest and supercooling is investigated by following novel paths in the H-T space. It is shown that coexisting FMM and AFI phases can be tuned in a number of ways at low temperature. These measurements also show that kinetic arrest temperature and supercooling temperature are anticorrelated, i.e. regions which are arrested at low temperature have higher supercooling temperature and vice versa.

Anomalous first-order transition in Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3: an interplay between kinetic arrest and thermodynamic transitions

Detailed magnetization measurements in La_{5/8-y}Pr_{y}Ca_{3/8} MnO_{3}, including magnetic relaxation properties, demonstrate the dynamic nature of the phase separated state in manganites. The difference between the field-cooled-cooling and zero-field-cooled magnetization curves signals the existence in the latter of blocked metastable states separated by high energy barriers. Results of the magnetic viscosity show that the system becomes unblocked in a certain temperature window, where large relaxation rates are observed. We propose a simple phenomenological model in which the system evolves through a hierarchy of energy barriers, which separates the coexisting phases. The calculated magnetization curves using this model reproduce all the qualitative features of the experimental data. The overall results allowed us to construct an H-T phase diagram, where frozen and dynamical phase separation regions are clearly distinguished.
