A new method of image formation by NMR is described. It is based on selective RF irradiation of the sample in switched magnetic field gradients. Selective irradiation may be achieved by tailored (or simple) excitation or tailored (or simple) saturation. Preliminary experiments illustrating various aspects of the method are described, and a two dimensional picture or image of a simple object is presented.

Image formation in NMR by a selective irradiative process

WE present here a detailed image showing the distribution of mobile protons in a thin section through a human wrist. The image was produced by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The image consists of 128 by 128 independent picture elements and has a resolution of about 0.4 mm. For the first time images produced by NMR can be compared in quality to those produced by X-ray tomography.

Backbending: Coriolis antipairing or rotational alignment?

Fast scan spin imaging has been used to produce representations of static distributions of the free water (fat or oil) contained in various biological specimens. It is believed that NMR imaging will be a valuable medical diagnostic aid in man as well as a useful tool for the biologist and botanist.

Line scan proton spin imaging in biological structures by NMR

A new method of spin-density imaging by NMR is described which allows simultaneous observation and differentiation of signals arising from spins distributed throughout a thin layer or plane within the specimen. The method, which is based on selective RF irradiation of the sample in switched magnetic-field gradients, can produce visual pictures considerably faster than previously described line-scan imaging methods. A simple example of a two-dimensional image obtained by the method is presented.
