Background: Several conducted studies have reported a higher and more frequent Helicobacter pylori infection rate in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and its association between H. pylori infection and T2DM. Materials and Methods: A case and control study was conducted based on 529 T2DM patients and 529 control. H. pylori was assessed by Serum anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA. Furthermore, patients were investigated for fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), serum cholesterol, and other biochemistry parameters. High Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection, Atrophic Gastritis and Hypochlorhydria in HIV-Positive Cameroonians Tested by Serological Stomach-Specific Biomarkers (GastroPanel®)

Introduction: Human being are major reservoir of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).The organism has been associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and many other nongastrointestinal tract diseases. This study aimed at detection and comparison of anti H. pylori antibodies (IgG) in serum of diabetes mellitus and non-diabetic cases as well as to observe the relationship of anti H. pylori antibodies to complications of diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group included 101 diabetics, diagnosed as per standard criteria. Of the total, 91 were type 2 and 10 were type 1 diabetes mellitus cases. The control group included 30 nos. of age and sex matched healthy subjects. Demographic and clinical information of both groups were recorded. RESULTS: Anti H. pylori antibodies (IgG) were found 88.1% in diabetics and 70% in control group and the result was significant statistically (P<0.05).The most common manifestation in anti H. pylori antibodies positive cases pyrosis (58.4%) followed by nausea (39%). High positivity of anti H. pylori antibodies were observed in almost all age groups in the diabetic group than the control. However, statistical significant difference was seen only in two age groups. CONCLUSION: The result showed that diabetics are more prone to H. pylori infection and need continuous monitoring.

Role of helicobacter pylori in diabetes mellitus & its complications

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection has been associated with hyperglycemia among type 2 diabetics. The objective of this study was to compare the H. pylori infection frequency in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Methods: This case-control study was done at Al-Tibri Medical College and Hospital from May 2019 to August 2019. After written and informed consent, patients between 18-75 years with epigastric burning, dyspepsia, regurgitation were included and with history of eradication therapy, antibiotic or NSAID use in the last 6 months or surgery of upper GI tract months were excluded. Type 2 diabetics were placed in one group and non-diabetic individuals in another. Both groups were compared for presence of H. pylori infection. Data was analysed using SPSS. Demographic variables included age, gender and status of H. pylori infection. Quantitative data was expressed as frequency and percentages. Chi-square test was applied to test for significance keeping p-value of <0.05 statistically significant. Results: From 480 patients, 355 patients showed positive H. pylori, among them 282 were diabetic and 73 nondiabetic (p-value <0.001). Amongst the 355 diabetics, 55% were male Among 73 non-diabetics, 64% were male. All the patients in the study had dyspeptic symptoms and complained of dyspepsia, epigastric burning and regurgitation. Conclusions: A substantial relationship between H. pylori infection among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients was observed compared to non-diabetics. As a result, diabetic patients having active dyspeptic symptoms should undergo further confirmatory tests for diagnosing H. pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection among type 2 diabetics: a case control study

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) together with chronic atrophic gastritis have also been associated to extragastric manifestations including neurological, dermatological, ocular, cardiovascular, metabolic, allergic diseases and hematologic disorders. Little or no data on the association of H. pylori infection andanaemia exist in Cameroon. We therefore evaluated the prevalence H. pylori infection among patients with anaemia. Methodology: Blood samples were aseptically collected for the measurements Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies, pepsinogene I et II levels, gastrine-17 in a total of 150 patients during the period February to July 2020. The blood samples required for the study were collected prospectively. Ethical clairance was obtained from the Centre Regional Ethics Committee for Human Sciences. An authorization of research was obtained from the authorities of General Hospital of Yaounde. All participants signed an informed consent form. Results: The GastroPanel® results showed that the prevalence of H. pyloriinfection was 90(60.00%).We observeda strong association of H. pylori with anaemia (OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.08– 4.46; p=0,02). Conclusion: The prevalence of H. pylori infection is high in patients with anaemia and thus requires continuous monitoring of these patients.

Helicobacter pylori Infection and Association with Anaemia in Cameroon Patients, Using GastroPanel® Serological Biomarkers (Pepsinogen I; Pepsinogen II; Gastrin-17; Helicobacter pylori IgG)

Introduction: Infection to Helicobacter pylori has been associated to many gastrointestinal diseases including gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. Chronic infections are frequent and severe in patients with diabetes mellitus (DMT2), probably due to the impairment of their immune status. The link between H. pylori infection and diabetes mellitus (DM) remains controversial. This study aimed at detection and comparison of anti H. pylori antibodies (IgG) in serum of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) and non-diabetic dyspepsia subjects and also to find if there exists any significant correlation between H. pylori infection and DMT2. Materials and methods: This case control study of 82 patients (51 diabetics and 31 non-diabetic subjects) was carried out in Yaounde Cameroon during the period January-April 2017. Clinical and sociodemographic information of both groups were recorded 5 ml of blood was aseptically collected for H. pylori IgG antibodies. Assay parameters were analysed using a software application GastroSoft (www.GastroPanel.com). Data was analysed using Epi info 7.0. All statistics were realized at 95% CI. Authorizations were obtained at the Yaounde Central Hospital, the Cite Verte District Hospital. Ethical clearance was also obtained from the National Ethics Committee. Results: Significantly raised Anti H. pylori antibodies (IgG) were found in diabetics (88.2%) than in the non-diabetic control group (67.7%), (P = 0.015) showing strong correlation between the association of H. pylori and DMT2. Dyspepsia was very common in anti H. pylori positive cases (83.6%). The most common diabetic complications observed in H. pylori positive diabetic subjects were retinopathy (81.0%), neuropathy (33.3%), diabetic foot (19.0%) and nephropathy (9.5%). The major diabetic risk factors in H. pylori positive subjects were obesity (39.5%), overweight (31.6%) and hypertension (31.7%). Significantly raised anti H. pylori antibodies were observed in almost all age groups in the diabetic groups. Conclusion: The result showed that diabetics are more prone to H. pylori infection and need continuous monitoring.
