System and methods for determining an optimized transmit spectra (spectral distributions of transmission power) for a set of communications channels that experience cross-talk among themselves and for transmitting data on the channels. The transmit spectra are preferably constructed so that largely contiguous frequency bands are allocated to each signaling direction (upstream/downstream) on each communications channel and/or to each channel in the set of channels. In one embodiment, each communications channel is restricted to a maximum time-averaged power. The method preferably includes steps of determining the channel transfer functions of the communications channel, determining interference characteristics of the channels, calculating substantially optimal transmit spectra for the communications channels, and redistributing the frequency bins so that they are contiguously grouped in each transmit spectra. The contiguous groupings allow wider frequency bands for signaling in the channel. In one embodiment, the channel is limited by a “peak-power constraint.”

Modems using a telephone line for high speed communications between them are arranged to monitor crosstalk from other existing communications systems with which they may mutually interfere, and adjust the power spectral densities (PSDs) of their transmitted signals to reduce overlap between the PSDs of the different systems, thereby reducing near end crosstalk. Communications can thereby be optimized for whatever crosstalk conditions may exist. The modems can have a master-slave relationship for communicating buffered frames in a half-duplex manner using a collision avoidance protocol for computer network access. Analysis of monitored crosstalk PSD information can be performed by each modem, by the master modem, or by a separate computer on the network. A digital signal processor used in each modem for receiving signals can be configured to be used at other times for the monitoring of crosstalk.

Reducing crosstalk between communications systems

A system and method for determining transmission characteristics for a communications channel and for transmitting data on the communications channel. In one embodiment, the method starts by determining the channel's transfer function and determining interference characteristics for the channel. The interference characteristics preferably include transfer functions describing the channel's susceptibility to cross talk from neighboring channels. The channel transfer function and the interference characteristics are then examined and a transmit spectrum (or power spectral density function) is constructed for the channel. The transmit spectrum preferably uses orthogonal separation of upstream and downstream communications to increase channel capacity. This method is useable in communicating data when the channel is subject to interference from one or more other communications channels, including near-end cross talk (NEXT) and far-end cross talk (FEXT), from other channels carrying the same service and/or different services. The present invention may be used in digital subscriber-line (xDSL) communications or in a variety of other applications, such as in well-logging and in systems involving multiple interfering radio transmitters.

Spectral optimization and joint signaling techniques with upstream/downstream separation for communication in the presence of crosstalk

Using at least one MIMO-capable transceiver allows weighting calculations for signals transmitted and received, and enables individual packets to adapt, in a scalable, flexible, and responsive fashion to the real-world dynamics of a continuously varying communications network environment. The method and system of this invention use adaptively-derived diversity means to rapidly and efficiently distinguish the desired signal from noise, network interference, and external interference impinging on the network's transceivers and can transmit with lessened overhead. ADC operations and signal transformations continuously update combiner weights to match dynamically-varying environmental and traffic conditions, thereby continuously matching necessitated signal and waveform transformations with environmental and signal effects and sources. Successive iterations of the adaptation algorithm let each node's multiport combiner and distribution weights approach the MIMO channel's Shannon capacity in high-rate networks, or to minimize power needed to close links at a specified rate in low-rate networks, e.g. Voice-Over-IP networks.

One of the major concerns related to the introduction of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) systems is the compatibility between such systems and transmission systems already deployed in the access network. In particular, three main noise sources must be considered, namely, near-end crosstalk (NEXT), far-end crosstalk (FEXT) and impulsive noise. The problem of evaluating the amount of NEXT noise on ADSL receivers due to DSL, HDSL, E1 and POTS disturbers is considered. Firstly, mathematical expressions for the power spectral density (PSD) of the above disturbers are provided and an expression for evaluating NEXT noise PSD is presented. Finally, the results obtained considering different scenarios (i.e., low-noise, high-noise and worst case NEXT coupling), are reported and discussed with the aim of providing useful information and guidelines for the introduction of ASDL systems in the access network. >
