Development of the buck-boost inverter with two switches and the application to the electronic ballast

This paper proposes a modified two-switch boost converter with high power factor, and makes a report concerning the application of it to electronic ballast. First, the behavior of the boost converter with two switching devices is analyzed and experimental results will be shown. The experimental results show that the circuit can decrease the harmonic distortion of the input current like a former boost converter. But the problematic points possessed by the circuit are to be scrutinized. Next, a modified boost converter circuit that can improve the problem is proposed. The proposed circuit has both function of boost chopper and charge pump. The experimental results show that the circuit can improve the power factor. Lastly, it is shown that these two switching devices can be used not only as active switches of the modified boost converter but also as active switches of a half-bridge type inverter for fluorescent lamp. As a result, it is revealed that the harmonic distortion of the input current obtained by the proposed electronic ballast sufficiently satisfies the maximum limit of IEC 1000-3-2 class C. And the electronic ballast realized the high power factor of 0.99.

An Electronic Ballast Using Modified Two-Switch Boost Converter.

The new circuit of the electronic ballast for the fluorescent lamp, which Is based on the back-boost converter is proposed. This circuit has the advantage further than the circuit that combined the converter for rectification with the inverter for lighting in some points. Those advantages are reduction of the number of elements and and improvement in the circuit efficiency, etc. And this circuit also satisfies regulation value of IEC class C on the relative harmonic contents of input current. From analyses of circuit operations and experimental results, the of circuit operations and experimental results, the effectiveness of the proposed circuit is shown.

Development of the electronic ballast transformed the neutral point type back boost inverter

This paper proposes a novel electronic ballast having boost functions that can reduce the harmonics distortion of input current. The behavior of the electronic ballast is analyzed and experimental results are shown. The circuit makes an action as a charge pump in addition to the conventional boost action. As experimental results, it is revealed that the harmonic distortion of the input current obtained by the proposed electronic ballast satisfies the maximum limit of IEC 1000-3-2 class C sufficiently. And the electronic ballast realized the high power factor of 0.96 and the high efficiency of 0.90.

An electronic ballast for suppression of the input harmonic currents

This paper presents a two-switch boost chopper with a sinusoidal current shaping and power factor correction scheme, which is applied for driving an electronic ballast using frequency series and parallel resonant inverter. In this paper, the working principle of "one-converter type" electronic ballast with power factor correction and active filtering functions is described by using the equivalent circuit of each operation mode, together with operation analysis. The performance evaluations of "one-converter type" electronic ballast with high-frequency resonant inverter are illustrated and discussed in experiments. As a result, it is revealed that the harmonic distortion of the input current obtained by the proposed electronic ballast satisfies the maximum limit of IEC 1000-3-2 class C sufficiently. A high power factor of 0.99 is realized.

Two-switch boost chopper-based PFC converter for electronic ballast

A novel modified half-bridge type inverter for the electronic ballast of fluorescent lamps is proposed. In this inverter, one of the conventional two voltage-dividing capacitors with relatively large capacitance is replaced by that with extremely small capacitance to prevent the inrush current from the AC voltage source and to work as a resonant capacitor for improving the power factor and harmonic distortion of the input current. Also, another capacitor with large capacitance plays an important role as a smoothing capacitor to improve the output crest factor. This inverter is analysed to define the relationship between the input current harmonics and parameters of the transformer. As a result, it is clarified that this inverter satisfies the maximum limits of the input current harmonic distortions in IEC 1000-3-2 Class C and that it realizes a power factor over 97% and THD less than 11%. Also, the power efficiency is 93%.
