The Heat Equation is one of the three classical linear partial differential equations of second order that form the basis of any elementary introduction to the area of PDEs, and only recently has it come to be fairly well understood. In this monograph, aimed at research students and academics in mathematics and engineering, as well as engineering specialists, Professor Vazquez provides a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the mathematical theory of the nonlinear heat equation usually called the Porous Medium Equation (PME). This equation appears in a number of physical applications, such as to describe processes involving fluid flow, heat transfer or diffusion. Other applications have been proposed in mathematical biology, lubrication, boundary layer theory, and other fields. Each chapter contains a detailed introduction and is supplied with a section of notes, providing comments, historical notes or recommended reading, and exercises for the reader.

Some new similarity reductions of the Boussinesq equation, which arises in several physical applications including shallow water waves and also is of considerable mathematical interest because it is a soliton equation solvable by inverse scattering, are presented. These new similarity reductions, including some new reductions to the first, second, and fourth Painleve equations, cannot be obtained using the standard Lie group method for finding group‐invariant solutions of partial differential equations; they are determined using a new and direct method that involves no group theoretical techniques.

Viewing solutions as continuous curves in a general space is the starting point of the abstract theory of differential equations, a way that we will travel quite often. In that case the initial data are taken in the Lp sense: ũ(t) → ũ(0) in Lp(Ω), for every p 0; if u0 is continuous, then the convergence takes place uniformly in x as t → 0, see Section 7.5.1. (3) Unfortunately, there are no equivalent L1 estimates for the Dirichlet Problem with nonhomogeneous data g 6= 0. We end this subsection with a simple but very useful consequence. Corollary 6.3 Let u be a limit solution with data u0 ∈ L1(Ω) and f ∈ L1(Q). If t1 > 0, then ũ(x, t) = u(x, t + t1) is the limit solution with data ũ0(x) = u(x, t1) and forcing term f(x, t) = f(x, t + t1). This important result is immediate for the approximations. We leave the details to the reader. Remark. Let us note that any concept of limit solution depends on the type of admissible approximations and on the functional setting in which limits are taken. The Porous Medium Equation

The primary goal of this paper is to provide a rigorous theoretical justification of Cartan’s method of moving frames for arbitrary finite-dimensional Lie group actions on manifolds. The general theorems are based a new regularized version of the moving frame algorithm, which is of both theoretical and practical use. Applications include a new approach to the construction and classification of differential invariants and invariant differential operators on jet bundles, as well as equivalence, symmetry, and rigidity theorems for submanifolds under general transformation groups. The method also leads to complete classifications of generating systems of differential invariants, explicit commutation formulae for the associated invariant differential operators, and a general classification theorem for syzygies of the higher order differentiated differential invariants. A variety of illustrative examples demonstrate how the method can be directly applied to practical problems arising in geometry, invariant theory, and differential equations.

Scaling laws reveal the fundamental property of phenomena, namely self-similarity - repeating in time and/or space - which substantially simplifies the mathematical modelling of the phenomena themselves. This book begins from a non-traditional exposition of dimensional analysis, physical similarity theory, and general theory of scaling phenomena, using classical examples to demonstrate that the onset of scaling is not until the influence of initial and/or boundary conditions has disappeared but when the system is still far from equilibrium. Numerous examples from a diverse range of fields, including theoretical biology, fracture mechanics, atmospheric and oceanic phenomena, and flame propagation, are presented for which the ideas of scaling, intermediate asymptotics, self-similarity, and renormalisation were of decisive value in modelling.
