This updated version of the popular handbook further explains all aspects of physical vapor deposition (PVD) process technology from the characterizing and preparing the substrate material, through deposition processing and film characterization, to post-deposition processing. The emphasis of the new edition remains on the aspects of the process flow that are critical to economical deposition of films that can meet the required performance specifications, with additional information to support the original material. The book covers subjects seldom treated in the literature: substrate characterization, adhesion, cleaning and the processing. The book also covers the widely discussed subjects of vacuum technology and the fundamentals of individual deposition processes. However, the author uniquely relates these topics to the practical issues that arise in PVD processing, such as contamination control and film growth effects, which are also rarely discussed in the literature. In bringing these subjects together in one book, the reader can understand the interrelationship between various aspects of the film deposition processing and the resulting film properties. The author draws upon his long experience with developing PVD processes and troubleshooting the processes in the manufacturing environment, to provide useful hints for not only avoiding problems, but also for solving problems when they arise. He uses actual experiences, called 'war stories', to emphasize certain points. Special formatting of the text allows a reader who is already knowledgeable in the subject to scan through a section and find discussions that are of particular interest. The author has tried to make the subject index as useful as possible so that the reader can rapidly go to sections of particular interest. Extensive references allow the reader to pursue subjects in greater detail if desired. The book is intended to be both an introduction for those who are new to the field and a valuable resource to those already in the field. Handbook of physical vapor deposition (PVD) processing

The vacuum arc is a rich source of highly ionized metal plasma that can be used to make a high current metal ion source. Vacuum arc ion sources have been developed for a range of applications including ion implantation for materials surface modification, particle accelerator injection for fundamental nuclear physics research, and other fundamental and applied purposes. The beam parameters can be attractive, and the source has provided a valuable addition to the spectrum of ion sources available to the experimenter. Beams have been produced from over 50 of the solid metals of the periodic table, with mean ion energy up to several hundred keV and with beam current up to several amperes. Typically the source is repetitively pulsed with pulse length of order a millisecond and duty cycle of order 1%, and operation of a dc embodiment has been demonstrated. Here the source fundamentals and operation are reviewed, the source and beam characteristics summarized, and some applications examined.

The Diamond Surface: Atomic and Electronic Structure

An ion source utilizing a cathode and anode for producing an electric arc therebetween. The arc is sufficient to vaporize a portion of the cathode to form a plasma. The plasma leaves the generation region and expands through another regon. The density profile of the plasma may be flattened using a magnetic field formed within a vacuum chamber. Ions are extracted from the plasma to produce a high current broad on beam.

High current ion source

A review of particle-solid processes pertinent to modelling plasma-wall interactions is presented, and sets of recommended data are given. Analytic formulas are used where possible; otherwise, data are presented in the form of tables and graphs. The incident particles considered are e−, H, D, T, He, C, O, and selfions. The materials include the metals aluminum, beryllium, copper, molybdenum, stainless steel, titanium, and tungsten and the nonmetals carbon and TiC. The processes covered are light ion reflection, hydrogen and helium trapping and detrapping, desorption, evaporation, sputtering, chemical effects in sputtering, blistering caused by implantation of helium and hydrogen, secondary electron emission by electrons and particles, and arcing.
