The invention relates to systems and methods for diversity combined data detection. Various embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for data processing. For example, some embodiments of the present invention provide data processing circuits including a pattern detection circuit having at least two data detector circuits each operable to receive the same series of data samples and to provide a first detected data output and a second detected data output, respectively. In addition, the data pattern detection circuit includes a result combining circuit that is operable to assert a pattern found output based at least in part on the first detected data output and the second detected data output.

A digital television (DTV) transmitter and a method of processing data in the DTV transmitter/receiver are disclosed. In the DTV transmitter, a pre-processor pre-processes the enhanced data by coding the enhanced data for forward error correction (FEC) and expanding the FEC-coded data. A packet formatter generates one or more groups of enhanced data packets, each enhanced data packet including the pre-processed enhanced data and known data, wherein the data formatter adds burst time information into each group of enhanced data packets. And, a packet multiplexer generates at least one burst of enhanced data by multiplexing the one or more groups of enhanced data packets with at least one main data packet including the main data, each burst of enhanced data including at least one group of enhanced data packets.

Two levels of error correction decoding are performed using first and second level decoders. A composite code formed by combining an inner component code and an outer component code can be used to decode the data and correct any errors. Performing two level decoding using a composite code allows the size of the inner parity block to be reduced to a single Reed-Solomon symbol while keeping a good code rate. The first level decoder generates soft information. The soft information can indicate a most likely error event for each possible syndrome value of the inner component code. The soft information can also include error metric values for each of the most likely error events. The second level decoder generates corrected syndrome values based on the soft information using the outer component code. The most likely trellis path that corresponds to the corrected syndrome values is then selected.

Decoding techniques for correcting errors using soft information

A sampled amplitude read channel is disclosed for reading a data sector recorded on a disk storage medium by detecting an estimated data sequence from a sequence of read signal sample values generated by sampling an analog read signal emanating from a read head positioned over the disk storage medium, the data sector comprising a user data segment and an embedded field comprising a known data segment. A sampling device samples the analog read signal to generate the read signal sample values and a trellis sequence detector detects a preliminary sequence from the read signal sample values. A post processor detects and corrects errors in the preliminary sequence using a syndrome generator responsive to the preliminary sequence representing the user data segment. The syndrome generator generates an error syndrome according to a predetermined error detection code. A boundary error compensator compensates for a boundary error event spanning the user data segment and the known data segment. A guided error connector, responsive to the error syndrome, corrects errors detected in the preliminary sequence.
