This article deals with the remote sensing and geographic information system techniques in assessing groundwater potential zones by the manipulation and analysis of the individual layer of spatial controlling data in a part of Deccan Volcanic Province, Maharashtra. Available geology, geomorphology, and soil maps were collected. Land use and land cover (LULC) and Lineament maps had been prepared using the LANDSAT-8 (TM and OLI) Satellite Image (November 2015). The SRTM DEM (resolution: 30 m) data had been employed for the preparation of slope and drainage maps. These maps were converted into the raster format. Analytic hierarchy process was applied to weight, ranking, and reclassify these maps in the ArcGIS version 10.4. Then, groundwater prospect map had been prepared by overlaying the maps. The results show that five groundwater potential zones such as very poor (11.77%), poor (21.73%), moderate (30.13%), good (25.34%), and very good (11.02%) exit. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the lineament density, LULC, and slope increase the area slightly only in the very poor to poor potential zones. Besides, the well yields, groundwater level fluctuation corresponding rainfall data had been utilized to validate. The yield values vary from 5.94 to 14.88 l/s in the good to very good potential zones, whereas 0.38 to 1.37 l/s within the poor to very poor potential zones. In addition, cross-correlation coefficients among groundwater level and rainfall is well-related to the groundwater potential index (R2 = 0.84), which will help to construct artificial recharge structures and the planning of sustainable groundwater management.

Over the last few decades we have witnessed a global U-turn in prevailing housing and urban policy agendas, spread around the world by the driving forces of globalization and neoliberalism. The new paradigm was mainly based on the withdrawal of states from the housing sector and the implementation of policies designed to create stronger and larger market-based housing finance models. The commodification of housing, together with the increased use of housing as an investment asset within a globalized financial market, has profoundly affected the enjoyment of the right to adequate housing. Taking the World Bank's 1993 manifesto as a starting point and the subprime crisis as its first great international flashpoint, this essay traces some key elements of the neoliberal approach to housing and its impact on the enjoyment of the right to housing in different contexts and times. The reform of housing policy — with all its components of homeownership, private property and binding financial commitments — has been central to the political and ideological strategies through which the dominance of neoliberalism is maintained. Conversely, the crisis (and its origins in the housing market) reflects the inability of market mechanisms to provide adequate and affordable housing for all.

With the changing climate, and hydro-geomorphological regimes in the state of West Bengal, India, inhabitants along the rivers and estuarine fronts are becoming increasingly vulnerable to continuous land erosion. The present paper deals with the erosion in parts of Cooch Behar and South 24 Parganas Districts to show similar displacement issues in contrasting geographical situations. The main objective of the study is to analyse the adaptation strategies, capacity, and resilience of the environmentally displaced population. Primary data on the living conditions of the concerned population have been collected, and RS and GIS techniques used to investigate their coping mechanisms under adverse climatic and geo-hydrological systems. It has been observed that in both the cases, settlement conditions were temporary with only basic amenities available for survival and low satisfaction level of the re-settlers, but having far more security of living. However, a lot of developmental initiatives are needed to reduce the impact of environmental hazards on the displaced population.

Environmental Vulnerability and Displacement Due to Land Erosion: Selected Case Studies in West Bengal, India

The contemporary issues of environmental degradation, population growth, human settlements and growing need for livelihood security pose ever increasing risks and vulnerability to human development. The chapter intends to focus on such major themes to include: (a) habitat and environmental issues of human concerns, (b) ekistics and ecology of social environment and (c) hazards and environmental management for sustainable development. Management of environment, food security and poverty alleviation are the primary factors contributing to the complexity of natural resource management, which is very important for achieving sustainable development goals. The rural poor depend on agriculture or are otherwise dependent on natural resources for their basic life support systems. The livelihood and well-being of rural and urban people depend fundamentally on the opportunities available to them, and these opportunities are shaped substantially by their access to resources, which in turn depends on numerous underlying political, social and macro-economic factors, those are transforming with the current trends of globalization, migration, market integration, democratization and decentralization.

Personal care items for women that are used during menstruation, vaginal discharge, and other body functions involving the vulva and vagina are known as feminine hygiene products. There are several products for women during menstruation to keep them feeling comfortable and dry. Choice of products depends on the cost of the product, convenience of use, traditional beliefs, and availability. Menstrual hygiene products such as sanitary napkins or towels, tampons, panty-liners, menstrual cups, menstrual sponges, and period panties are some of the products that may be utilized. Because the vagina naturally flushes away bacteria, feminine hygiene products that are supposed to cleanse may cause allergic reactions and irritation. The review is based on secondary sources available in esteem journals and web pages. The evolution of menstrual products has been a long pathway. Nowadays, these products are more user-friendly, which increases women’s freedom and ability to work. However, it also carried specific health-related issues. Because menstruation has been a taboo subject from ancient past till today’s life, it is critical to begin talking about periods and the products used by women. Knowing more about the materials used products is a step toward achieving both menstrual hygiene’s, and it will also help avoid health-related issues and maintain environmental sustainability.
