This disclosure is concerned with providing metallic articles, such as cutting and drilling tools, gears, bearings and other structures subject to wear in use, with wear-resisting coatings adhered at desired surfaces thereof, preferably in the form of a thin, generally fractional mil, nickel-boron porous deposit within the voids and over the surface of which a molten mixture of soft metal and organic plastic material of low friction coefficient has been adhered. Improved properties are imparted by cryogenic treatment.

An amorphous alloy article having solderability is obtained by subjecting an amorphous alloy article to an immersion treatment with an acidic activating bath comprising hydrochloric acid, citric acid, nitric acid, a nonionic or amphoteric surface active agent; electroactivating the amorphous alloy with a cathode-electrolytic bath comprising phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, citric acid and a nonionic or amphoteric surface active agent; and immediately thereafter electroplating the electroactivated amorphous alloy with a metal selected from copper, nickel, tin, zinc and alloys thereof.

Process for electroplating amorphous alloys

The present invention is directed to a method for providing substantially particulate free gases by dispensing a highly pressurized gas from a carbon steel cylinder. The carbon steel cylinder is made by a process comprising the steps of forming an open ended cylinder from a billet, blank or tube of carbon steel. The side walls of the cylinder are made thicker than the desired final thickness of the cylinder side wall. One end of the cylinder is closed. The interior of the cylinder side walls is then honed to remove at least some of the excess side wall thickness. A tapered neck is then formed and tapped in the open end of the cylinder. The interior surface of the cylinder is then electropolished with a chromium rich electroplating solution to provide a surface layer with reduced iron and increased carbon and chromium on the interior surface wall of the cylinder. The cylinder may then be vacuum baked to reduce adsorbed contamination.

Method for treating carbon steel cylinder

An activation solution is provided for forming adherent chromium electrodeposits on stainless steel substrates from high energy efficient chromium baths. The activation solution suitably is a mixture of chromium acid, and chloride ion, or a mixture of chloride and bromide ions. A preferred solution contains 0.15M chromic acid and 0.14M chloride ion, or with 0.025M bromide ion, and the stainless steel is anodically etched in the activation solution at about 55° C.

Method for forming adherent, bright, smooth and hard chromium electrodeposits on stainless steel substrates from high energy efficient chromium baths

The two-step electrolytic activation process comprises anodic treatment in a polarizing solution followed sequentially by a cathodic treatment in an electrolyte solution. The activation process is useful for cast iron substrates to enable electrodeposition of chromium thereon which is adherent, bright, smooth and hard, particularly from high energy efficient chromium baths.
