Difficulty of reducing poverty represents today a major challenge for all countries. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of economic growth and inequality on poverty during crisis periods . This study covers a MENA sample composed of eight countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria and Yemen) from 1990 up to 2009. The econometric results show that economic growth and income inequality are proceeding in an opposite direction as for as poverty is concerned.

Assessment of energy poverty convergence: A global analysis


Purpose
Mitigating the energy trilemma (ET) is of great importance for dealing with climate change and realizing carbon neutrality. To this end, effectively assessing the level of the ET is essential. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current situation and the spatio-temporal changes of the ET in the whole of China.


Design/methodology/approach
Moreover, based on provincial-level data in China for the period 2002–2017, and by using the dynamic estimation model, we aim to determine the specific marginal impacts of smart transportation (ST) on the ET, and the possible channels through which ST works on the ET.


Findings
We thus present the following findings: (1) The performance of both ET and its three pillars is gradually improving in China. Moreover, the situation tends to vary dramatically among various regions and provinces, and the gap between the best performers and the worst is large. (2) ST plays a significant role in inhibiting the ET, a finding that remains robust after a series of tests. And (3) the ET eradication effect of ST is caused mainly by improved innovation, advanced technical efficiency, and the increasing energy scale.


Originality/value
Accordingly, we put forward some policy recommendations to help tackle ET and accelerate ST in China.

Examining the multidimensional energy poverty trap and its determinants: An empirical analysis at household and community levels in six provinces of China

This paper presents a meta-narrative review of the concept and measurements of energy poverty in developing countries. The literature survey was conducted using the Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis (SALSA) and snowballing methods. Three academic databases, including Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scopus, were searched for studies published in English from 1970 to 2021 on the topic of energy poverty in developing countries. The review found that many definitions are provided to explain the concept of energy poverty due to the differences between countries in terms of climate and season, household preferences, accommodating home standards, and social and cultural beliefs. The lack of generally accepted definition of energy poverty has led to confusion between the concepts of energy poverty and fuel poverty. Both concepts apply to the problem of energy consumption in residential sector, but they have similitudes and differences. Three categories of indicators are used for communicating energy poverty issues at the local, national and global levels: single indicators, dashboard indicators, and composite indices. Each approach has potential advantages and limitations. The composite indices are more generally applied because of their capacity to aggregate various dimensions of energy poverty and facilitate benchmarking between countries. However, the scarcity of data prevents the widespread use of the measurements of energy poverty. Consequently, it contributes to the delay in assessing the implementation of energy policy to achieve the sustainable development goal of eradicating energy poverty in developing countries.

L’article analyse l’impact de la croissance economique sur la pauvrete monetaire de neuf pays de la region du Moyen-Orient et de l’Afrique du Nord (la Tunisie, l’Algerie, le Maroc, l’Egypte, l’Iran, la Turquie, la Jordanie, la Mauritanie et le Yemen) entre 1990-2004. Pour caracteriser la nature de la croissance et formuler les politiques et les strategies appropriees qui permettraient de reduire la pauvrete, nous avons construit pour ces neufs pays les indicateurs de croissance et de politiques pro-pauvres de Kakwani et Pernia (2000) et de Kakwani (1993, 2001). Les resultats empiriques montrent que les estimations ponctuelles de ces indicateurs sont peu precises. Les intervalles de confiance ne permettent pas de se prononcer clairement sur la nature de la croissance, notamment dans le cas du Yemen, du Maroc et de l’Egypte. En outre, l’incertitude sur l’estimation ponctuelle de l’IGTI est grande dans le cas de la Tunisie, de l’Iran et de la Turquie, puisque l’intervalle de confiance a 95 % de l’IGTI est de [2 ; 4.6]. Ce qui rend difficile de recommander a ces pays la politique economique a adopter pour reduire la pauvrete.Classification JEL : D63, O2, C19, C33
