Abstract Discussions under this title were held during a special session in frames of the International Conference “Fractional Differentiation and Applications” (ICFDA ’14) held in Catania (Italy), 23-25 June 2014, see details at http://www.icfda14.dieei.unict.it/. Along with the presentations made during this session, we include here some contributions by the participants sent afterwards and also by few colleagues planning but failed to attend. The intention of this special session was to continue the useful traditions from the first conferences on the Fractional Calculus (FC) topics, to pose open problems, challenging hypotheses and questions “where to go”, to discuss them and try to find ways to resolve.

Fractional Calculus: Quo Vadimus? (Where are we Going?)

In this work, we construct compositions of vector processes of the form , t > 0, , β ∈ (0, 1], , whose distribution is related to space-time fractional n-dimensional telegraph equations. We present within a unifying framework the pde connections of n-dimensional isotropic stable processes S2βn whose random time is represented by the inverse , t > 0, of the superposition of independent positively skewed stable processes, , t > 0, (H2ν1, Hν2, independent stable subordinators). As special cases for n = 1, and β = 1, we examine the telegraph process T at Brownian time B ([14]) and establish the equality in distribution , t > 0. Furthermore the iterated Brownian motion ([2]) and the two-dimensional motion at finite velocity with a random time are investigated. For all these processes, we present their counterparts as Brownian motion at delayed stable-distributed time.

Time-Changed Processes Governed by Space-Time Fractional Telegraph Equations

In the present paper, the solutions of the hyperbolic partial differential equation with fractional time derivative of order α (1<α≤2) are obtained with the help of approximate analytical method of nonlinear problems called the homotopy analysis method. By using initial values, the explicit solutions of the equations for different particular cases have been derived which demonstrate the effectiveness, validity, potentiality and reliability of the method in reality. Numerical results for different particular cases are presented graphically. The numerical solutions show that only a few iterations are needed to obtain accurate approximate solutions.

Homotopy analysis method for solving fractional hyperbolic partial differential equations

A random motion on the Poincare half-plane is studied. A particle runs on the geodesic lines changing direction at Poisson-paced times. The hyperbolic distance is analyzed, also in the case where returns to the starting point are admitted. The main results concern the mean hyperbolic distance (and also the conditional mean distance) in all versions of the motion envisaged. Also an analogous motion on orthogonal circles of the sphere is examined and the evolution of the mean distance from the starting point is investigated.

Travelling Randomly on the Poincaré Half-Plane with a Pythagorean Compass

Starting from the hyperbolic Brownian motion as a time-changed Brownian motion, we explore a set of probabilistic models--related to the SABR model in mathematical finance--which can be obtained by geometry-preserving transformations, and show how to translate the properties of the hyperbolic Brownian motion (density, probability mass, drift) to each particular model. Our main result is an explicit expression for the probability of any of these models hitting the boundary of their domains, the proof of which relies on the properties of the aforementioned transformations as well as time-change methods.

On the probability of hitting the boundary for Brownian motions on the SABR plane

We examine the hyperbolic, planar Brownian motion and its time-fractional version. The analogy between the hyperbolic Brownian motion and Brownian motion on the sphere is also analysed. We examine in detail the connection between the equations governing the distributions in the Cartesian and hyperbolic coordinates. We discuss the time-fractional generalization of hyperbolic Brownian motion and give a representation of it as composition of classical hyperbolic Brownian motion with a reflecting Brownian motion on the line.
