Leucena (Leucaena leucocephala) is an alternative used for animal feeding in the Northeastern of Brazil due to its resistance to drought and its high nutritional value. They are forest species whose seeds are affected by fungi that cause abnormalities and damage to seedlings, seed deterioration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of essential oils in reducing the incidence of fungi associated with L. leucocephala seeds and their interference with physiological quality. The treatments were the following: essential oils of Cymbopogon nardus, Boswellia carteri, Eucalyptus globulus, Helianthus annuus, Vitis vinifera seeds, Eugenia caryophyllata, Melaleuca alternifolia and Rosmarinus officinalis in a concentration of 1 mL · L and fungicide, using 100 seeds per treatment.In order to overcome dormancy scarification with sandpaper No 100 in the opposite region to the micropile. The sanitary quality of the seeds was made with the incubation method in Petri dishes containing double layer of filter paper moistened with ADE. Seed physiological quality was determined based on seed germination, emergence and vigor tests. The experimental design was completely randomized with ten treatments. Eucalyptus, clove and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oils reduced the incidence percentage of fungi associated with leucena seeds. Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil reduced the physiological quality of leucena seeds.

Foliar nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi is of a great concern in millet productions. The genus Aphelenchoides has a very wide host range especially in cereals. Mode of seed transmission with associative fungal genera have significant role in nematode feeding and movement in the host tissues being fungivore in nature. Highest incidence of A. besseyi have been noticed in abnormal seeds stored for four years as compared to apparent healthy once of the same duration. The germplasm TNAU-194 (174N) harboured high incidence of A. besseyi. Nematode, A. besseyi infested seeds harboured Alternaria alternata and Curvularia lunata were found most suitable for A. besseyi reproduction were as other where poor to very poor in nematode reproduction.

Studies on Aphelenchoides besseyi (Christie, 1942) on proso millet and fungi favoring their development

The sanitary quality of 26 lots commercial seeds of tropical forages, produced in different regions (2004-05 and 2005-06) was analyzed. The lots were composed of seeds of Panicum maximum (‘Massai’, ‘Mombaca’ e ‘Tanzânia’) and stylo (‘Estilosantes Campo Grande’ – ECG). Additionally, seeds of two lots of P. maximum for exportation were analyzed. The blotter test was used, at 20oC under alternating light and darkness in a 12 h photoperiod, for seven days. The Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Rhizopus genus consisted the secondary or saprophytes fungi (FSS) with greatest frequency in P. maximum lots.
