The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of the NamSon landfill on subsurface geological structure and hydrological environment by geophysical techniques and hydrochemical analysis of surface and groundwater. The electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), self-potential (SP) and very low frequency (VLF) methods were used for the investigation of geological structure near the landfill. Three profiles (900 m long in total) of the two-dimensional ERT, VLF density sections and 180 SP data points scattered throughout the study area near the disposal site constituted the basis of the data used in analysis. Additionally, surface water and groundwater samples were collected from six sites in the area for the chemical analysis. Interpretations of geophysical data show a low resistivity zone (< 15 Ωm), which appears to be a fully saturated zone with leachate from landfill. The results of the geophysical investigations are not always fully confirmed by the results of hydrochemical analysis. The quality of water in the vicinity of the landfill dramatically decreased over the year (2015–2016) and actions should be taken to inverse this negative trend.

Landfill leachate assessment by hydrological and geophysical data: case study NamSon, Hanoi, Vietnam

The paper presents complex analyses of geophysical site investigation results. The electrical resistivity method was used to investigate the potential pollutant migration pathways within areas of existing and former landfill sites. For the purpose of the present study, there were four municipal waste landfills and one industrial landfill chosen for further comprehensive analyses. The landfill bottom was isolated using geomembrane liner. However, ground water monitoring results revealed that the base was not leakage-free. Another two landfills were established in the past, when no containment systems were legally required. The geoelectrical investigation was the final part of an overall analytical assessment of the contaminated sites. The study was aimed at pollution spatial migration analyses and the interpretation of results, for further design of the reclamation and restoration plans. A clear correlation between pollution indicators such as salt compounds and electrical resistivity, allow aerial analyses and the precise determination of contaminated zones. The research results presented in the paper have been recently obtained and concern a period from 2010 to 2015.

Application of Electrical Resistivity Data Sets for the Evaluation of the Pollution Concentration Level within Landfill Subsoil

The article addresses the application of electrical resistivity imaging for engineering site investigation in Pishva Hospital, Varamin, Iran. Some aqueduct shafts exist in the study area backfilled by loose materials. The goals of this study are to detect probable aqueduct tunnels and their depth, investigate filling quality in the shafts as well as connection(s) between them. Therefore, three profiles were surveyed by dipoledipole electrode array. Also, to investigate the potentially anomalous areas more accurately, five additional resistivity profiles were measured by a Combined Resistivity Sounding-Profiling array (CRSP). According to the results of 2-D inversion modelling, a main aqueduct tunnel was detected beneath the central part of the site. Finally, the resistivity pattern of the detected aqueduct system passing the investigated area was provided using the obtained results.

Application of Electrical Resistivity Imaging for Engineering Site Investigation. A Case Study on Prospective Hospital Site, Varamin, Iran

Complex studies were carried out to recognize the fen structure and peat properties in the Calowanie Fen area, belonging to the Natura 2000 network. The studies were conducted in two study areas that differ significantly in terms of peat thickness. Electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) was used to identify the properties of the peat and its substrate, such as thickness and electrical resistivity. Comparison of the field studies with the laboratory tests has shown that the ash content rises electrical resistivity in peat. In addition, the study has shown that the application of non-invasive geophysical methods in protected areas is justified. The fen, as a medium containing mostly water, was a proper test area for the ERI measurements.

Application of electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) for the assessment of peat properties: a case study of the Całowanie Fen, Central Poland

Standard test methods may not be suitable or sufficient for determining the geotechnical conditions of a structure’s subsoil and the effects of the designed structures on the environment. Geophysical test methods, validated with other methods, may prove useful. In recent years they have found many new applications in engineering practice, both geotechnical and environmental. The advantages of geophysical methods include the non-destructive and non-invasive nature of the tests, their low costs and quick results, as well as compatibility with different materials, including soils, solid rocks, wastes and anthropogenic formations. The paper presents the analysis of laboratory and field investigations including research in a modified oedometer, resistivity chamber, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and resistivity cone penetration test (RCPT). Laboratory tests allowed for the assessment of the degree of saturation and porosity of sandy and clayey soils. The tests were carried out on saturated and unsaturated soil samples and allowed for the determination of some relationships between electrical conductivity and porosity. The proposed equations were used to assess parameters in in situ studies using RCPT tests and showed good agreement with reference values based on undisturbed soil samples. ERT tests confirmed the usefulness of electrical measurements in the quality assurance of subsoil and hydrotechnical structures. The tests showed weakening zones in the levee body, discontinuity of the vertical sealing system on the modernized section of the embankment, and location of the top of clay deposits.

Applications of Electrical Resistivity Surveys in Solving Selected Geotechnical and Environmental Problems

Geophysical methods were applied for hydrogeological targets in many countries including Vietnam. This paper presents results of using complex geophysical techniques as well as 2D electrical resistivity imaging (ERI), vertical electrical sounding (VES), very low frequency (VLF), and seismic refraction for geological structure investigation for locating the aquifers and assessing the hydrogeological conditions for groundwater potential in industrial zones of North Hanoi, Vietnam. The locations of two aquifers are determined by their depth and thickness on the basis of resistivity and seismic velocity values which were proved by stratifications of three boreholes to 40–60 m of depth on the study area. There are connections from surface water to shallow aquifer by hydraulic windows, as follows from VLF data. The deeper aquifer can be considered as a potential groundwater supply, but the water level is descending in time, as shown by hydrological monitoring. However, with careful use and by reducing sources of pollution, groundwater can continue to be an important natural resource for future.
