A method of recovering methane from a solid carbonaceous subterranean formation having a production well in fluid communication with the formation and am injection well in fluid communication with the formation, comprising the steps of passing a gaseous fluid containing at least 60 volume percent nitrogen and at least 15 volume percent oxygen through a membrane separator to produce an oxygen-depleted effluent, pressurizing the oxygen-depleted effluent to a pressure above a reservoir pressure of the solid carbonaceous subterranean formation, injecting the oxygen-depleted effluent into the formation through the injection well, and recovering a fluid comprising methane through the production well.

A process for the production of methanol comprises feeding an amount of a hydrocarbon feedstock and an amount of an oxygen feedstock and an optional carbon dioxide feedstock to a partial oxidation reactor and an optional reformer to produce a partial oxidation reactor effluent comprising hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide; electrolyzing water to produce hydrogen and oxygen and recovering at least a portion of the hydrogen to produce a hydrogen stream; adding an amount of a hydrogen feedstock, at least a portion of which is obtained from the hydrogen stream, to the partial oxidation reactor effluent to produce a synthesis gas stream having a predetermined ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide and optionally to carbon dioxide; subjecting the synthesis gas to methanol synthesis to produce a methanol product stream and a tail gas stream; separating the tail gas stream into at least two streams comprising a purge stream and a recycle stream, the recycle stream comprising a substantial portion of the tail gas stream; and, recycling the recycle stream to the partial oxidation reactor

The present invention optimizes the relationship of variables associated with a process having inputs and outputs such that the process has controlled variables, manipulated variables, associated variables and disturbance variables, to maximize production rates. The method of optimizing the relationship includes the steps of prioritizing errors associated with the controlled variables, optimizing controlled variable deviations from their setpoints over a predetermined future time horizon based upon manipulated variable differential moves, suppressing errors associated with the future controlled variable while penalizing moves having large manipulated variable movement for balancing the reduction of future control error against large manipulated variable movement, weighting the manipulated variables for reducing deviation of the manipulated variable from a predetermined target value set artificially high so as to allow preferential movement with respect to some manipulated variables over other manipulated variables, and applying a constraint deviation variable to effectuate deviations outside allowable bounds.

Maximizing process production rates using permanent constraints

Process and apparatus for extraction of oil and hydrocarbons from crushed hydrocarbonaceous solids, such as oil shale, involving the pyrolyzing of the crushed solids with liquid hydrocarbon and syn gas rich in hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Crushed hydrocarbonaceous solids are treated with liquid hydrocarbon and hot syn gas at an elevated temperature in a rotary kiln where the crushed solids are cascaded into the hot syn gas for sufficient time to strip the volatile liquids and gases found in the solids, removing the vaporized liquids, enriched syn gas and spent crushed solids from the kiln, fractionating the vaporized liquids and enriched syn gas into the desired fractions. The enriched syn gas is particularly suited for use in combined-cycle electricity generation and in the preparation of various by-products. The process efficiently recycles heat and energy to reduce harmful atmospheric emissions and reliance on external energy sources.

Process for the recovery of hydrocarbon fractions from hydrocarbonaceous solids

A retrofit method for increasing production capacity of an ammonia plant having a front end including in series primary and secondary reformers and a shift converter for reacting a hydrocarbon feed, steam and air to form a make-up syngas stream comprising hydrogen and nitrogen at about design stoichiometry, and a synthesis loop wherein a recycle syngas stream is combined with the make-up gas to form a syngas feed to ammonia converters. The retrofit involves the installation of an air separation unit to supply oxygen and nitrogen streams. The oxygen is used to enrich air supplied to the secondary reformer and increase the hydrogen content of the make-up gas substantially above the design stoichiometry and capacity. The nitrogen stream is supplied to the synthesis loop to obtain a desired hydrogen to nitrogen ratio in the syngas feed to the ammonia converters and compensate for the excess hydrogen in the make-up gas. The synthesis loop, if desired, is upgraded to include a high activity catalyst converter for increased ammonia production.

Ammonia production with enriched air reforming and nitrogen injection into the synthesis loop

An integrated process for making methanol and ammonia from a hydrocarbon feed stock and air is disclosed. An air separation unit is used to produce substantially pure oxygen and nitrogen gas streams. The oxygen gas is used in the secondary reformer to increase the operating pressure of the reformers so that compression to methanol synthesis pressure may be done by a single stage compressor. The nitrogen gas is used to remove carbon oxides impurities from a ammonia synthesis feed stream in a nitrogen wash unit in addition to supplying the nitrogen reactant in the ammonia synthesis gas. Use of nitrogen wash obviates the need for steam shift and methanation reactions used in prior art processes.
