Paleomagnetism of upper Cretaceous rocks from South China

This list presents results published up to the end of 1968 with the exception of some Russian and other work which awaits translation. I am indebted to many workers in this field who have written pointing out errors and omissions from previous lists. These are corrected here. In compiling these lists I am helped considerably by those who regularly send reprints of their work. I hope that this practice will continue.

Paleomagnetic evidence of a drift of the Japanese main island during the paleogene period

Two new species of conchostracans, Cyclestherioides wyomingensis and Prolynceus laneyensis, belonging to the Cyclestheriidae and Lynceidae, respectively, are described from the Eocene Laney Member of the Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA. These are the first Cenozoic fossil conchostracans to be formally reported from North America. Cyclestherioides wyomingensis has a close affinity to the extant Cyclestheria hislopi. The latter is a pan-tropical species, found between approximately 30°N and 35°S. Thus, Cyclestherioides may indicate that the Laney Member was deposited in a subtropical setting. The conchostracans and associated fauna of the Laney Member suggest that this member was deposited nearshore in a shallow lake. The concept of Cyclestherioides is emended and some fossil species referred to this genus are revised.

: The paper presents data on the paleomagnetic pole position for the Mesozoic and Tertiary, derived from red beds in Xichuan, Yunnan, Hunan, Hubei and Guangdong Provinces. The results obtained by analysis and by comparison with those found from neighbouring countries are summarized as follows: (1) The mean position of the paleomagnetic pole for the Early Tertiary was probably at latitude 78 deg. N, longitude 171 deg. E, and for the Jurassic and Cretaceous was at latitude 59 deg. N, longitude 153 deg. E. Evidently, the paleomagnetic pole has undergone change of position, wandering from low latitudes to high. (2) The middle and upper portions of red beds of the Henyang Basin exibit a reversal of paleomagnetization; hence these rocks are considered to be of Oligocene and Miocene age respectively. Examined by the 'remagnetized arc' method, the magnetizations of all the samples measured are rather stable. (Author)
