The spatial features of emitted wireless signals are the basis of location distinction and determination for wireless indoor localization. Available in mainstream wireless signal measurements, the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) has been adopted in vast indoor localization systems. However, it suffers from dramatic performance degradation in complex situations due to multipath fading and temporal dynamics. Break-through techniques resort to finer-grained wireless channel measurement than RSSI. Different from RSSI, the PHY layer power feature, channel response, is able to discriminate multipath characteristics, and thus holds the potential for the convergence of accurate and pervasive indoor localization. Channel State Information (CSI, reflecting channel response in 802.11 a/g/n) has attracted many research efforts and some pioneer works have demonstrated submeter or even centimeter-level accuracy. In this article, we survey this new trend of channel response in localization. The differences between CSI and RSSI are highlighted with respect to network layering, time resolution, frequency resolution, stability, and accessibility. Furthermore, we investigate a large body of recent works and classify them overall into three categories according to how to use CSI. For each category, we emphasize the basic principles and address future directions of research in this new and largely open area.

From RSSI to CSI: Indoor Localization via Channel Response, A survey on indoor localization using PHY-layer information

With the proliferation of smart devices capable of communicating over a network using different protocols, each year more and more successful attacks are recorded against these, underlining the necessity of developing and implementing mechanisms to protect against such attacks. This paper will review some existing solutions used to secure a communication channel, such as Transport Layer Security or symmetric encryption, as well as provide a novel approach to achieving confidentiality and integrity of messages. The method, called Value-to-Keyed-Hash Message Authentication Code (Value-to-HMAC) mapping, uses signatures to send messages, instead of encryption, by implementing a Keyed-Hash Message Authentication Code generation algorithm. Although robust solutions exist that can be used to secure the communication between devices, this paper considers that not every Internet of Things (IoT) device or network design is able to afford the overhead and drop in performance, or even support such protocols. Therefore, the Value-to-HMAC method was designed to maximize performance while ensuring the messages are only readable by the intended node. The experimental procedure demonstrates how the method will achieve better performance than a symmetric-key encryption algorithm, while ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of information through the use of one mechanism.

Vulnerabilities and Limitations of MQTT Protocol Used between IoT Devices

In this paper, aiming at tackling the significant concern of identity revocation, we set up outsourcing addition into IBE for the first time and recommend a revocable IBE proposal in the server-aided setting. Identity-Based Encryption with Outsourced Revocation in Cloud Computing

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) applications and their interference with our daily life tasks have led to a large number of IoT devices and enormous sizes of IoT-generated data. The resources of IoT devices are limited; therefore, the processing and storing IoT data in these devices are inefficient. Traditional cloud-computing resources are used to partially handle some of the IoT resource-limitation issues; however, using the resources in cloud centers leads to other issues, such as latency in time-critical IoT applications. Therefore, edge-cloud-computing technology has recently evolved. This technology allows for data processing and storage at the edge of the network. This paper studies, in-depth, edge-computing architectures for IoT (ECAs-IoT), and then classifies them according to different factors such as data placement, orchestration services, security, and big data. Besides, the paper studies each architecture in depth and compares them according to various features. Additionally, ECAs-IoT is mapped according to two existing IoT layered models, which helps in identifying the capabilities, features, and gaps of every architecture. Moreover, the paper presents the most important limitations of existing ECAs-IoT and recommends solutions to them. Furthermore, this survey details the IoT applications in the edge-computing domain. Lastly, the paper recommends four different scenarios for using ECAs-IoT by IoT applications.

Edge-Computing Architectures for Internet of Things Applications: A Survey

The internet of things (IoT) is prominently used in the present world. Although it has vast potential in several applications, it has several challenges in the real-world. One of the most important challenges is conservation of battery life in devices used throughout IoT networks. Since many IoT devices are not rechargeable, several steps to conserve the battery life of an IoT network can be taken using the early prediction of battery life. In this study, a machine learning based model implementing a random forest regression algorithm is used to predict the battery life of IoT devices. The proposed model is experimented on ‘Beach Water Quality – Automated Sensors’ data set generated from sensors in an IoT network from the city of Chicago, USA. Several pre-processing techniques like normalisation, transformation and dimensionality reduction are used in this model. The proposed model achieved a 97% predictive accuracy. The results obtained proved that the proposed model performs better than other state-of-art regression algorithms in preserving the battery life of IoT devices.

Predictive model for battery life in IoT networks

With the development of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), wireless network security has more and more attention paid to it. The Sybil attack is one of the famous wireless attacks that can forge wireless devices to steal information from clients. These forged devices may constantly attack target access points to crush the wireless network. In this paper, we propose a novel Sybil attack detection based on Channel State Information (CSI). This detection algorithm can tell whether the static devices are Sybil attackers by combining a self-adaptive multiple signal classification algorithm with the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). Moreover, we develop a novel tracing scheme to cluster the channel characteristics of mobile devices and detect dynamic attackers that change their channel characteristics in an error area. Finally, we experiment on mobile and commercial WiFi devices. Our algorithm can effectively distinguish the Sybil devices. The experimental results show that our Sybil attack detection system achieves high accuracy for both static and dynamic scenarios. Therefore, combining the phase and similarity of channel features, the multi-dimensional analysis of CSI can effectively detect Sybil nodes and improve the security of wireless networks.

Accurate Sybil attack detection based on fine-grained physical channel information

Single authentication mechanisms and broadcast characteristics of wireless networks make the Access Point (AP) vulnerable to spoofing attacks and Sybil attacks. However, Sybil attacks seriously affect network performance. Sybil nodes act with different identity, and prevent the normal clients from transmission. In this paper, a self-adaptive MUSIC algorithm is proposed, which improves the accuracy of the angle of the indoor wireless device by eliminating the phase offset in channel state information (CSI), and designs different types’ detection algorithm of Sybil attacks and spoofing attacks based on different Sybil attack models. And we experiment on mobile and commercial WiFi devices. The average detection error of angle is below 6.3°. After combining analysis of received signal strength indicator (RSSI), our detection algorithm can effectively detect whether the nodes launched by Sybil attacks, and the identity of other clients disguised by spoofing attacks. According to the experimental results, the scheme can distinguish the Sybil clients and the normal clients accurately, and the average success rate of the Sybil attack detection system is 98.5%.

Channel state information-based detection of Sybil attacks in wireless networks

With the development of data transactions, data security issues have become increasingly important. For example, the copyright authentication and provenance of data have become the primary requirements for data security defense mechanisms. For this purpose, this paper proposes a data provenance system with retention of reference relations (called RRDP), which can enhance the security of data service in the process of publishing and transmission. The system model for data provenance with retention of reference relations adds virtual primary keys using reference relations between data tables. Traditional provenance algorithms have limitations on data types. This model has no such limitations. Added primary key is auto-incrementing integer number. Multi-level encryption is performed on the data watermarking to ensure the secure distribution of data. The experimental results show that the data provenance system with retention of reference relations has good accuracy and robustness of the provenance about common database attacks.
