Cannabis use disorder: epidemiology and management

This is a massive book by 171 contributors in 127 chapters. Rather than a textbook, it is more of a reference library of the field. As in other such books with multiple contributors, it does not have a unifying perspective, and there are many overlaps and repetitions. Certainly, any information in the field could be found, if not in a chapter itself, in the long list of references following each chapter. The first section is on normal development, including eight chapters on biological development. Although there is heavy emphasis on the biological, psychological theories are not neglected. There are expected sections on clinical syndromes, etiology, treatment, and the relationship of child psychiatry to education, pediatrics, the law, and public health. The last section is a grab bag of chapters on training, research, ethics, and history. In a book of this sort, besides repetitions, there are bound to be contradictions. It

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Textbook

Objective: Substance abuse amongst youth has been growing in developed and developing nations, including Turkey. This growth is related to a number of factors, not the least of which are forces associated with development, globalization, and youth culture. The identification of risk factors for youth substance abuse for particular populations is an important approach to the development of prevention and intervention strategies. 
Methods: We analyzed the data from a survey of 31,272 youth ages 14 to 18 years enrolled in high schools in Istanbul that covered the use of various substances as well as a number of demographic, socioeconomic, cultural, psychopathological, and psychosocial risk factors. Our data consisted of answers to similar questions that were asked in European School Survey Project (ESPAD), Youth in Europe (YIE), and Monitoring of the Future Survey and the National Household Survey in USA. We used binary logistic regression analyses to generate risk profiles for each of the following categories of lifetime use: tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, other illicit drugs, and multiple (two or more) other illicit drugs. 
Results: We identified statistically significant risk profiles for these different substance categories. All the different risk factor categories contributed variably to the use of gateway drugs (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicits), but the multiple use of other illicit drugs was associated primarily with a narrower set of psychopathological (suicidality, irritability, and antisocial problems) and psychosocial variables (family substance abuse and peer influence). 
Conclusions: These risk profiles share some commonality with those found amongst other populations. However, these unique risk profiles for Turkish youth can be useful in developing primary and secondary preventive interventions to address the growing substance use and abuse problems. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, focusing on time trends and risk factors of substance use in youth of emerging countries including Turkey, are needed.

Substance Abuse: Risk Factors for Turkish Youth

A significant number of American teens use and abuse illicit and addictive substances. The year 2010 will witness the largest numbers of adolescents in American history, so there is a clear need to improve our understanding of adolescent substance abuse disorders (SUDs) and to provide effective prevention and treatment. This review provides an examination of the scope of the problem, the progression of adolescent SUD, and developmental and risk factors that are unique to adolescents. It also discusses assessment, treatment, and prevention models available for adolescent SUD.

Substance Abuse Among Adolescents: Current Perspectives

One-third of the US Latino population is under the age of 18. Studies show a significant percentage of Latinos aged 12 or older use illegal substances. Acculturation, family relationships, and depression are contributing factors to this abuse. Previous studies concentrated on populations along the US-Mexico border. This study examined the relationship between illegal substance abuse, acculturation, family relationships, and depression in Latino adolescents aged 12 to 19 in Northeast Tennessee. The Pan American Youth Inventory was administered to 66 Latino youth. There was a significant relationship between substance abuse and depression, as well as substance abuse and lifetime suicide ideations.
