A system is provided for controlling power generation. For example, the system may include a drive, an electrical generator coupled to the drive, and a controller coupled to the drive. The controller may include a stabilizing mode responsive to a utility signal representative of a grid destabilizing event.

Generator control having power grid communications

An electromagnetic, continuously variable transmission power split turbo compound includes a turbo compound turbine driven by exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine, and a power split device comprising a magnetic gear arrangement. The magnetic gear arrangement includes a high speed rotor comprising a first quantity of permanent magnets, a low speed rotor comprising a second quantity of permanent magnets, and a plural pole rotor between the high speed rotor and the low speed rotor. A first rotor of the high speed rotor, the low speed rotor, and the plural pole rotor includes a mechanical input drive adapted to be driven by the turbine. A second rotor of the high speed rotor, the low speed rotor, and the plural pole rotor includes a mechanical output drive. A third rotor of the high speed rotor, the low speed rotor, and the plural pole rotor is unconnected to a mechanical drive and includes a controlling rotor for controlling a ratio of input drive angular velocity to output drive angular velocity.

Electromagnetic, continuously variable transmission power split turbo compound and engine and vehicle comprising such a turbo compound

An input shaft rotates at variable rotation rates and is driven by a variable speed source of energy or power such as by the propeller of a wind-driven electrical generator. The input shaft is connected to a first rotor which electromagnetically interacts with a second rotor to create a torque to cause the second rotor to rotate. The interaction of the first rotor and the second rotor may be varied electrically to vary the torque and in turn the rotation rate of the second rotor. The second rotor interacts with a stator to produce AC electrical power. The rotation rate of the second rotor is controlled so that the generator supplies AC power at an essentially constant frequency.

Variable Speed Synchronous Generator

A power generation system is disclosed comprising an electrical generating set (16) and a power module (20) for supplying power from a supplementary power source (22). The power module comprises a DC to AC converter (26). The power generation system comprises means (32) for measuring an output of the electrical generating set, and a controller (30) for controlling the DC to AC converter, wherein the controller is arranged to control the DC to AC converter (26) in dependence on a measure of the output of the electrical generating set (16), thereby to improve the quality of the load seen by the electrical generating set. This may improve the efficiency and stability of the generating set.

Power generation system

A synchronous machine and related systems include a stator and rotor separated by an air gap. The rotor includes a rotating DC power supply coupled to exciter windings disposed adjacent the air gap. Power from air gap harmonics, including air gap slot harmonics induce current in the exciter windings, which is rectified and supplied to the rotor field windings. In operation, a desired current level in the rotor field windings can be achieved through control of the DC power supply or superposition of harmonics into the stator winding current which induces the prescribed current in exciter windings.

Systems and methods concerning exciterless synchronous machines

An input shaft rotates at variable rotation rates and is driven by a variable source of energy or power such as by the propeller of a wind-driven electrical generator. The input shaft is connected to a clutch which is connected to an output shaft and which is operable to rotate the output shaft at a preselected or constant rotation rate. The clutch has a first rotor which electromagnetically interacts with a second rotor to create a torque to cause the second rotor to rotate. The interaction of the first rotor and the second rotor may be varied electrically or mechanically to vary the torque and in turn the rotation rate of the second shaft. The shaft is preferably connected to a synchronous generator; and the rotation rate of the output shaft is controlled so that the generator supplies power at an essentially constant rotation rate.
