A coating liquid is squirted through a needle control nozzle directed into open end of internal threads of a fitting or tube and is deflected radially to form a spray cone by an air jet from a revolving nozzle set slightly in front and off the axis of the nozzle for the coating liquid. An end plate affixed to the revolving nozzle limits the forward spread of the spray cone, so that the coating thickness taper is cut off at the inner end of the coating on the threads. The thickness taper produced at the outer end of the threads by the spray cone favors easy engagement of the threads in making a tight threaded joint.

Apparatus for spray-coating internal surfaces of tubular articles

A planar member such as a phosphor coated fiber optic plate, having a thermal coefficient of expansion that is incompatible with that of a cathode ray tube faceplate, is accurately supported a precise distance from the inner surface of the faceplate by a plurality of glass posts having slots in which the peripheral portion of the fiber optic plate is disposed. A spring contact member affixed to at least one glass post applies a holding force to the fiber optic plate and makes electrical contact between the plate and a conductive coating on the inside of the tube envelope.

Means for securing planar member to cathode ray tube faceplate

A rectangular multi-apertured shadow mask electrode having a rectangular peripheral reinforcing frame of L shaped cross section is mounted within the rectangular envelope of a color cathode ray tube adjacent to the faceplate with a spacing gap between the frame and the side wall of the envelope. An electron shield of thin metal (e.g. Al) foil extends around and across the spacing gap to prevent scattering of beam electrons during overscan of the mask. The shield comprises an inner flange attached to one flange of the frame by means of tabs and an outer flange pressed against the side wall of the envelope. At each corner, the shield includes a portion of U-shaped cross-section disposed within the spacing gap with the sides of the U resiliently engaging the envelope side wall and the other flange of the frame.

Shadow mask cathode ray tube shield

A method of testing a panel assembly (10) of a color cathode-ray tube, prior to sealing a faceplate panel (12) of the assembly to a funnel section of the tube, detects defects in the assembly including dents and misregistration of an apertured shadow mask (16) mounted therein adjacent to a luminescent screen (14) disposed on the faceplate panel. The screen is exposed to radiation including ultraviolet, but substantially excluding visible, radiation passed through apertures (32) in the mask, and is examined for variations in color from light emitted thereby, whereby the variations in color are indicative of defects in the assembly.
